Well done Austria! Congrats! Two EBEL nations are now in Sochi, I think that's pretty fantastic!

Heikki Mälkiä, the Acroni Jesenice coach, has extended his contract for another two years. This is a very important signing for us.
-
Also in Salzburg the refs were really good.
What is disturbing is that the series must be almost decided when non Austrian clubs get a fair refereeing performance.

Pure blindeside hit by Brown and no penalty.I remeber very similar situation in Ljubljana, where Rodman received match penalty and 6 games suspension for similar hit.

Page after the game for slovenian media: "You're all crazy here in Ljubljana. I won't give any comments. You've seen it all. People out here are all savages."
-
As a Jesenice fan, I think this is a very important game for KAC also. In the playoffs, the role of a goallie becomes even more important than in regular season and with Kristan in top form, Medvescak would be a very dangerous oponent for KAC in the quarterfinals.
I remember the 2007/08 season, when KAC was 2nd after the regular season and Olimpija was 7th, but Olimpija with Westlud simply demolished KAC with 3:0.
Medvescak also shown his playoff skills last season when they finished 8th after regular season and then impessively won the series against no. 1 seeded Graz.

Olimpija's captain Ziga Pance gave a very interesting (and controversial) answer in Zurnal (daily newspaper with the biggest circulation and readership here in Slovenia) before today's derby between Jesenice and Olimpija. He said that he don't want to fan the rivalry between Jesenice and Olimpija. On the contrary. He said that given what are doing the Austrian referees in this league it seems that double standards have fallen deep into their subconscious, so reaching a play off spot really means a lot to all non-Austrian teams and that it would be nice for slovenian hockey that both Olimpija and Jesenice would reach the play off spot.
-
Well, i don't want to argue with anyone here. If some of you guys would like to see Austrian-only EBEL then this is your legitimate wish. If you ask me, that would be a huge step back for the league itself and also for the hockey in this part of Europe and also for the hockey in Austria. I think that a true hockey fan would only wish EBEL to expand further, i think Bolzano, Feldkirch, Innsbruck would be a great additions.
As i said, i am a big EBEL fan, in the last 4 seasons i watched over around 100 EBEL games between only Austrian clubs (i got torrents of the Premiere games on cifnation, diwana and 5minsforfighting), and i really know a lot about this league. I know that referrees are generally pretty poor (there are a few bright exceptions like Schimm and Berneker), i know that KAC and Salzburg have a "special status" (pretty much like Real and Barcelona in La Liga), i know everything about Olimpija's administrative error in 2007/08 finals, i even wrote an extensive article about it: http://www.rtvslo.si/blog/urosq/hok…2008-03-26/8786
I believe that equal standards for non Austrian clubs is what EBEL truly strives for, but not enough has been done in this area. In fact I 100% with this post on IH forums: "While I do not doubt anymore that there is a double standard in refereeing in the league I can not imagine and do not see any evidence that this is the consequence of a deliberate plan by someone and that the refs are ordered to whistle against non-Austrian teams as you claim.
It is much more plausible to me that in general the suspicious refs and the also disciplinary committee members (or a majority thereof) have a subtle disposition of the league being "our party" which causes them to be biased in an more or less sub-conscious way." -
Hockey fans here in Slovenia are extremely frustrated with the continuous Austrian sided referree decisions. More and more people believe that these referree decisions are supported and sometimes even encoureged by the league itself who wants to have all Austrian clubs in the playoffs. Then there's the also the disciplinary commission with unreasonably severe suspensions for players of non-austrian clubs (Alba case & Hebar, etc.). All Slovenian hockey fans also rememberer the 2007/08 season where with the momentum they had, Olimpija began the final series against Salzburg in style, taking a 3–1 lead and standing just one step from the trophy. Then, out of the blue and barely two hours before the crucial fifth match, came the news that "due to an administrative error, Olimpija is stripped of the third win".
There are more and more hockey fans who no longer go to the EBEL games and there are more and more people who think Jesenice and Olimpija should left EBEL and make a seperate league with Medvescak, Sapa, Partizan and some other Slovenian and Hungarian teams, and maybe also with Italian clubs.
I am huge EBEL fan, i think EBEL is the best possible league for all of us, fans, players and sponsors, so i really hope this scenario won't happen, but i do think that EBEL must react as soon as possible and make the necessery steps to ensure equall treatment for non-Austrian clubs in the league. I still believe that equall standards for non Austrian clubs is what EBEL truly strives for, but i'm in the distinct minority here.

Well, this is just sad in every way.

rivers about his 5+20 penalty
translation in english
I have never in my life got a penalty for an ordinary bodycheck. This was a very bad decision from the referree, i didn't even hit him much. It was said to se him how he's simulating. With 35 years i learned a new lesson about acting. Sadly, this was the turning point of the game and we lost it. I came to help, but in positive direction for the team.

Totally agree with RexKramer. I am a huge EBEL fan, but there are more and more cases where Austrian and non-Austrian clubs are treated with double standards. Non Austrian clubs can always expect the harshest possible penalty. Three most obvious cases:
- 2007/08 season where with the momentum they had, Olimpija began the final series against Salzburg in style, taking a 3–1 lead and standing just one step from the trophy. Then, out of the blue and barely two hours before the crucial fifth match, came the news that “due to an administrative error, Olimpija is stripped of the third win”.
- harsh penalties for Alba players that together with the points system left Alba totally uncompetiteve for 24 games in 2008/09 season which subsequently meant no play of spot for them
- this season-long suspension of Hebar
These three cases are just top of the mountain. There are lots and lots of smaller cases where non Austrian clubs and its players aren't treated or protected equally. Look at this vicious attack on the most important Medvescak player Banham. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vtg_mnlNPuM Banham was injured and missed a few games, but Kaspitz didn't get no suspension. -
what i can see from the above comparison is that top ebel clubs like salzburg, vienna and apperantly graz can succesfully play against clubs from top European leagues, and bottom ebel clubs have some difficulties against top clubs from lesser quality European leagues
-
i've made this comparison of how good did EBEL teams perform against other clubs from other European leagues in this preseason. All results are after regular time, even if the games gone into overtime or shootouts.

i watched austria's games against usa and latvia and i think austria didn't play that bad at all... the group was immensely strong with sweden, usa and latvia, which are currently simply too strong opponents for austrians (the same happened with slovenia in canada last year, when we get canada, usa and latvia in the group stage, and then slovakia in the relegation round)
what i really missed on the austrian side is a bit of toughness, i really don't understand why austrians are playing so soft when they are in the national team, because i know all players from EBEL and they really know to play aggresive and hard... i was also pretty dissapointed with vanek... i thought vanek would be for austria what kopitar is for the slovenian national team (true leader, awesome playmaker who make those who play with him better), but he was far from that... probably vanek is just a different type of player than kopitar, more of a scorer who needs very good linesmates around himself

I watched the game between Jesenice and Salzburg yesterday and i must admit i was shocked and amazed by how jesenice outplayed the bulls nearly from start to finish. Jesenice played without Poloncic and Varl, and Salzburg played without Kalt and Welser. Right from the start Jesenice took the initiative, and with every minute this initiative intensified, and Jesenice quickly became so dominant, that i got the feeling we are playing against Salzburg's farm team. That was without a doubt one of the top five Jesenice's performances in the EBEL. Even the 4th line, made of 19-21 year old jesenice youngsters played simply excellent, scored a goal, hit the post and prepared a few more great chances. Be awere of Ziga Jeglic (yesterday was his debut in EBEL), who i think has a chance to develop into an excellent player, he just needs a few more kilos and some experiences, but he showed really great sense for the game. I also have to mention excellent stromberg-pare duo, there was some great chemistry between them. The first Jesenice line was standardly good.
Salzburg played without any wish, and looked pretty bored, not showing any interest, which surprised me quite a bit. They simply didn't put any efford into the game yesterday.
