The changes made by teams during the busy NHL off-season
have already made a difference at this early stage of
the season.
Boston's Martin Lapointe scored the game-winner against
Washington Monday afternoon and has three points in his
first three games, all Bruin victories.
Detroit's Dominik Hasek held Vancouver at bay by stopping
29 shots as the Red Wings won their second straight game.
Dallas' Pierre Turgeon assisted on both Jere Lehtinen
goals as the Stars beat Los Angeles Tuesday, 2-1.
Jeremy Roenick has been a house of fire in Philadelphia,
racking up five points in three games.
New York Islanders waiver draft pickup Chris Osgood
stoned the Florida Panthers Saturday night, 3-0, stopping
all 31 shots to up his record to 2-0.
Finally, two of the biggest acquisitions face off on
national TV Wednesday night as Eric Lindros' New York
Rangers host Jaromir Jagr and the Washington Capitals at
8 p.m. ET on ESPN.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: BRIAN SAVAGE -
http://nhl.com/intheslot/read/spotlight/index.html
For hockey purposes, you can sum up Brian Savage in four
words: Skilled, intense, team player. But his career has
been hampered by injuries and he hasn't played a full season
since he played 81 games in 1996-97. NHL.com's John
McGourty profiles Savage and finds that his gameness and
willingness to help his team by playing hurt has been
proven time and time again.
IN THE SYSTEM: PASCAL LECLAIRE -
http://nhl.com/intheslot/read/system/leclaire100901.html
From a very young age, Pascal Leclaire knew he wanted to
be a hockey player. The Columbus Blue Jackets' top pick
from the 2001 NHL Entry Draft grew up in Quebec idolizing
Patrick Roy. One year when he was young, he told his
teacher that he wanted to be a hockey player when he grew
up. Her response was just to laugh and say "nobody does
that." Well, Pascal is on his way to making it in the NHL,
but he isn't in a rush to get there. He wants to learn as
much as possible before he gets to "The Show."

LUNCH PAILERS: MARTIN LAPOINTE -
http://nhl.com/intheslot/read/lunchpailers/index.html
Martin Lapointe is ready to prove his critics wrong. They
said Boston paid too much when they signed the free-agent
this summer. They said he was just a useful member of the
Detroit Red Wings, not a key ingredient. They said he is
good, but not "that" good. NHL.com's John McGourty wrote
that this season is Lapointe's chance to prove that he has
moved into the upper echelon of the NHL's talent pool.
COFFEY: KOIVU FIGHTING BACK -
http://nhl.com/columns/coffey/coffey_koivu101001.html
Anyone who ever watched Saku Koivu play hockey knew he
wasn't going to go quietly into the night in his battle
with cancer. NHL.com columnist Phil Coffey wrote that
Koivu has already taken an aggressive approach to fighting
cancer and no sight would make the hockey world happier
than seeing Koivu lace up the skates soon.

QUOTE SHEET
"I didn't know it was my 400th at first. When I was on the
bench the play was going on, they dropped the puck, and I
was like '400! I'd better keep the puck!' It would be nice
to keep, so I was hoping some other guy wouldn't score and
get the puck."
-- Toronto forward Alexander Mogilny on his reaction
after scoring his 400th NHL goal.
