Can someone please explain the love affair with this guy? It was the same thing a couple of years ago, people frothing at the mouth to get him on the Wings. Is it just because he is from Detroit? If so fine, I can understand the attachment to a hometown guy.
While I appreciate he is big and finished the season with over 120 hits but there is hitting and then there is HITTING. I haven't followed his career but have seen him play and have never seen him throw what I would categorize as a "big hit". Nor have I ever seen him fight. So while he is big and throws some hits, from what I have seen I would not categorize him as a punishing hitter or an intimidating physical force for that matter.
He also strikes me as a guy with hands of steel, unfortunately I am talking about scoring where the skilled guys have soft hands so steel hands isn't a good thing. Case in point is the highlight on his player page of NHL.com is him scoring an empty net goal.
I am not trying to rag on the guy but there seems to be an inordinate amount of "love" for a guy that appears to me to be a pretty average third or fourth line player. The fact that the Sharks aren't resigning him (a skilled puck possession team that lost to the Ducks), suggests to me that he really didn't deliver what they were looking for. What am I missing.
What a STUPID move by DUM DARCY. I would much rather have Max than USELESS Grier. There are enough USELESS players on the team ( Stafford, Hecht, Peters) that there was no need to add another one, yet DUM Darcy keeps his job??????
