So you want to be a professional hockey player eh...you obviously must be the one with superior DNA or touched by god and the one who just may get a cup of coffee in the NHL. You are the less than the .001% of the 1 % of the millions of amateurs playing hockey out there. To get that far you also started playing when you were about 4 or 5, bought expensive equipment every year, travelled countless miles to games and tournaments all for fun. When you showed some size and or promise you were invited to tryout, be evalauted, critiqued and chosen to compete in serious levels of minor hockey. Couple this with competitive summer leagues, plus camps on the side with parents forking out a small fortunes in money/time for years. Add in numerouse broken bones along the way, head games by other players/coachs and even parents, some actually intending to injure you physically and or emotionally. Now off to Jr where as a rookie you get rocked several times week one in camp by the Vets to test you and put you in your place and then you do the same a year later to some poor unsuspecting rook. Don't forget more head games and being berated endlessly by coaches, the concussions, blown out knees, separated shoulders, lost teeth, groin tears, more fights, long endless bus trips, missed family events, short Xmas, long regular season schedule, grinding playoffs and brutal summer workout programs that make army bootcamps seem like playschool. Education i.e. school, yeah...not so much, at least for now, just show up when not on the road. Lucky day when you get drafted, not 1st round or second but hey its all good right? Extra year of Jr. then off to the minors for who knows how long and not for exactly great money. The grind doesn't change and you are getting close, then one day after a few years toiling you get a call to the show and you have finally won the lottery and a chance to establish yourself in the league. Will you yoyo up and down for another few years? Get traded several times and uproot your now young family? Get called out in the media by a coach, or get suspended for on ice infractions? How will all the contract negotiations work out? Will you even have an NHL job next year = long summers eh? Will your career in the bigs last the avg 3 years after a slew of injuries and a now shortened life expectancy or be lucky like Lidstrom and see 20? Do you deserve to be a millionaire player? Think any of you or your kids have a real shot at winning this lottery? The owners, well, they showed up with the bags of coin so they get to call the shots you figure. Guess you must be a greedy player is all anyone can say. All the aforementioned would never happen because the game is purely for fun right!!! We can only imagine...but I doubt greedy is what I would call you.
