Austrian anomaly: The unlikely rise of Coyotes forward Michael Grabner
Michael Grabner has endured rough starts at almost every level of his hockey career. In his rookie season with the Vancouver Canucks in 2009, he broke his ankle while playing soccer before a game against the Colorado Avalanche. In his first season (2004-05) with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League, he broke his collarbone, slowing his development. On the first day of his hockey career in Villach, Austria, he was ready to pack it in.
“My mom signed me up when I was 5 and I had never been on the ice before,” Grabner said. “A lot of my friends had started at 2, 3 or 4 so while I was leaning on a cone, literally walking across the ice, my buddies were playing with pucks and skating circles around me.
