I swear, Austria has been the better team by far this game. The only area where they (Norway) are doing much better is physical battles, and they're a bit of a dirty team. However, the lion's share of the chances have been for Austria, and I can't help but feel like one of them is going to go through soon. However, talk of scoring is cheap, someone has to actually put one of them through sooner or later. Haudum has been playing inspired hockey, which makes me happy to see. That was a bad goal for Starkbaum to give up by the way, looking at the replay it appears he should have seen the puck the whole way.

Michael Raffl was impotent offensively, but aside from a few bad penatlies, he still contributed a lot defensively.
Thomas Raffl and Fabio Hofer were as, if not more, inept offensively. They also provided their share of bad penalties, but they didn't provide anything meaningful defensively. Michael Raffl is the best of them offensively, but in the NHL he is no offensive juggernaut. The biggest difference between Michael and everyone else is that he has a great two-way game even when he is struggling offensively.
I miss Ulmer and Viveiros. The defensemen were bad. I would characterize Schlacher's performance as "brave". Brave, but not effective. He played physically, had one nice possession that led to a shot IIRC, but just lacks the offensive or defensive skills to be effective against competition of this level. Heinrich's lack of size really showed today because he came up short on a couple of key poke checks that led to shots on goal for Switzerland, and some passes or clearance attempts were just beyond his reach and led to the inability to keep the puck in the zone. His calling card is that he's a mobile defenseman, but I felt he he struggled to move the puck very effectively against a team as fast as Switzerland. Pallestrang looked a bit overwhelmed, and usually he is a rock-solid defenseman, but he didn't seem to be able to do anything with the puck when it would come to his corner. The same could be said of Strong. Unterwerger probably did the lion's share of puck-handling. He's always going to be a limited-ceiling player, but in that role he was somewhat adequate.
Zwerger, Haudum and Baumgartner were by far the smartest line. They were able to get the puck into the offensive zone, and then get the cycle going. However, they didn't have the skill or physical ability to create actual chances.
Peter actually has some, albeit limited, puck-moving ability. He is not entirely a physical presence like Wolf. But he is mostly just a physical presence. With Ulmer and Viveiros, even Bernd Wolf, you wouldn't need him on the PP.
Herburger looked physically overwhelmed. He's a smart player. But he's small, and he's not as fast. In Switzerland he was a mid-six forward generously, and the Swiss players are at least NLA stars. Schneider is extremely fast as an ECHL player, as an EBEL player, and as a member of the Austrian National team. However, the Swiss are wayyyy faster, or at least as fast. Therefore, he couldn't derive an advantage from that. And I've never been under the impression that he's a stunning individual at other things like puck-protection, change of direction, or dangling. I thought Ganahl was not as bad today. He's got some very clever tricks to be disruptive and create some semi-chances.
The fourth line was good for providing energy, being disruptive, throwing their weight around and trying to keep the Swiss out of the offensive zone. But I wouldn't recommend any of them to receive more playing time, because I have a feeling that their abilities are limited to those roles.
To stand a chance, they would need to have passed the puck extremely well and gotten to the right spots to make chances because the Swiss were the physically superior team in almost every way. However, unforced passing errors were what killed the team eventually.

Hofer has been the worst player on the ice. Pains me to say because I've been warming up to him, but not today.
The frustrating thing is that it isn't the high-pressure passes that they're missing. Every time they have some time and space to make a good pass, they make a bad pass. So the offense never gets started. Through almost 55 minutes, no line has looked seriously dangerous.
-
I say that and then immediately Schlacher does it and makes it work...
-
Trying too hard to be cute and make tricky passes. When you're in alone, sometimes it's just better to shoot the puck.
-
If the news about Pusnik is true, I think VSV fans can take consolation in the fact that he is probably not yet ready for the EBEL just yet.
-
Don't understand your opinion. The entire roster consists of players of the EBEl or at least a farm team and the youngest is 20. Why should Neubauer be part of it?
And I believe there are other player in this age with experience in the EBEL like Lanzinger, ..., and they are not invited
I was thinking of Henrik Neubauer.
-
I wonder why no Neubauer. For the purposes of this initial roster, he is not a bad candidate.

Witting got 6 assists. Pilloni was 1+1. Zitz had 1 goal. Huber and Feldner each had 1 assist. Only Salzburg forward who didn't score any points was Dennis Lobach. On the other side, Ivan Korecky also got his first goal. Pretty good game for Austrians I would say.

schlacher und Lanze nicht im line up
Injured?

Great Post! I have a few thoughts.
First, I think it's very fair that there is a national team multiplier for junior national team players. The training compensation fee, as I understand it, should be compensation for the resources spent to develop an athlete. The suggestion that clubs spend 3x or 5x more to develop national team players come across as very unegalitarian. Players should not be penalized for playing for the national team. Finally, as you mention, it's effectively worked as a transfer fee, and is at least in part responsible for some of the poorer clubs electing to go with legios over Austrians. I think the existence of a training compensation fee is entirely defensible, but this national team multiplier is what I take issue with.
As to your list, some of the older ones might be ready, and I hope and am excited for them to receive the chance to show what they can do, though as you mentioned they would be contributors at best. Some of the younger ones by their own admission need a bit more time to get ready. I would generally be skeptical that more than a handful of them would be able to slot into a mid-6 type role.

Whether Felhaber or Keating make the NHL is irrelevant to the fact that they are two of the best players in the league. For the purpose of helping Marco develop they need not make it that far.
-
Austria should really take a shot at Norway this year. The players they were missing (Thoresen, Holos, KA Olimb, VA Olsen, Hoff) really pale in comparison to the players that Austria can be supplemented with this year. They're an aging team and they had their heyday, but those days are gone. Hopefully Austria can take advantage.
-
Bernhard Posch with the 2nd assist on the breakout pass. Watch out for him. He's a real exciting kid and rising through the ranks quickly.
-
Could anyone fill us in on what to expect, who are the stars on the Austrian team, who are the favorites, what type of result is expected and the feeling of the team after the first two games?
-
OEHV should take a flier on Neubauer and invite him to that early-stage NT camp before all the imports and the playoff team players get in.
-
They won the friendly in Vojens 4-2, which is an increasingly sobering fact.
-
First career Erste Liga goal for Bernhard Posch!
-
Joke scorekeeping.
Yannic Pilloni got a goal and an assist today. Never touched the puck wasn't even on the ice.
-
Sorry, but I think Senna Peeters is not Austrian, he is from Belgium. Or am I wrong?
He's trying to transition. Played for the NT multiple times last year and went to camps. Waiting on the passport...

HK Olimpija beat out Red Bull Juniors 4:2, but Huber scored one goal and Zitz assisted on the other. Schreier also got a secondary assist.

I thought France was truly awful, unrivaled as the worst team in the tournament. Texier and Guebey who were not present aside, I don't believe there were any players on that team who are serious prospects for the future. The closest would be Lucien Onno, but even still he's a long shot at best. I also felt Payr and Maier were solid, but Baumgartner showed a lot of flaws that are legitimate concerns moving forward. Love Freimuller's articles, always have loved them, but I did snort audibly to read "Pusnik...hardly lost pucks."
02 is a fairly weak class. If it comes down to 01+02, it likely won't end well. Freimuller lists Wallner, Thaler, and Oskar Maier (of the recent Red Bull prospects probably the least impressive), but if there is a leader it will be when Senna Peeters... People are excited for next year when the last 00+01 tournament takes place, but I'm becoming more pessimistic by the day. I'm sure the goal there will again be to avoid relegation, and delirious amounts of excitement when the goal is achieved.

I thought Lanzinger, Hochegger, and Baumgartner had very good games today. Good win and might be enough to stay up.
