Lineups are out for the U20 vs Norway today. Backup Goaltenders today.

Defenders Justin Krueger and Denis Reul are down for Germany, and Latvia's top defender Oskars Bartrulis is probably out as well. Not to wish harm on opposing defensemen but we need as much help as we can get.

I just read the news we might lose Starkbaum (to wife's pregnancy) and bring in Swette? If this is true them I must say. I appreciate the hard work that Alpo Suhonen puts in on many different things, I am definitely in line with his goals for youth development and for Coaching development. However, his inability to control his interpersonal relationships is extremely childish and unacceptable. A little quarrel over plane tickets is not worth a trip to the Olympics.

To some extent but not necessarily. An Austrian example would be Patrick Obrist. He plays in the NLA, which nominally sounds like an achievement, as the NLA is more prestigious than the Extraliga, but he can't even make the Austrian team. He's in the NLA because he has a swiss license and contact with swiss agencies. The opposing team had 15 Patrick Obrists. Austrians do have a hard time cracking the top lines but that's because the EBEL's value is somewhat artificially inflated by Legios...touchy subject. Austria usually does pretty good against the Slovak B teams in the Euro Ice Hockey Challenge, and those Slovak teams are better than this one while Austria is usually without Grabner and Raffl for the challenge. No one was asking for a blowout but the persistent inability to score against anybody is troublesome.

I'm not giving up hope yet. Just keep experimenting on the first line with who can run with Grabner and Raffl, and please no more Mitterdorfer. He did worse in the Mestis league last season than Marco Zorec. Zorec isn't on the team so I see no compelling reason why Mitterdorfer should be on the top line.

:whistling:

Most of the better Slovak youth are developed in the Czech youth leagues and naturally graduation to the Extraliga. It's like saying Norway has a strong roster because it has SHL players. If they grew up in Sweden and have Swedish licenses they will probably play there as adults, it's not really a skill merit. A lot of people thought because they had SHL players they could beat Austria in Sochi, but I knew that wasn't the case and it turned out not to be. Furthermore, the good Extraliga Slovaks like Bakos, Dravecky, Marcinko, were all not here. Only Juraj Mikus from last year's WC roster was present. All of the KHL players play for Slovan, which is like Hungary choosing players from Szekesfehervar. The players from Slovan that were released were released because they are inconsequential to the KHL regular season which is going on right now. The AHL player played 8 games last season getting one assist and does not have a club right now. All hope is certainly not lost. With the right improvements this team can still do well. But the team we lost to was not a powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination.

Keeping in mind that Austria won the entire Super Challenge tournament last year...

Lost 4-2 to Farjestad BK. Dominic Divis had a 82% save rate. When the actual championship comes some serious consideration needs to be given to Max Haselbacher. Nothing should be more important than producing the best product on the ice. I hated the lines. The players were lined according by club as opposed to by skill. This is a national team friendly match though, the purpose of this friendly or set of friendlies is to increase the chemistry between lines comprised of the top players. Hopefully the team does better with Lukas Haudum. I don't like Steffler with Kernberger. Steffler with Nussbaumer like towards the end of the game will be better.

About the pedigree of the Slovak roster, I looked over it and I think I recognized no people from last year's world championship. I'm much more interested in the games against Norway because Norway will bring a more representative roster and give a better measuring stick than Slovakia's B/C team.

I only watched the first quarter because of a schedule conflict and I only have the box score from this morning's game with Farjestad U20. Didn't like Mitterdorfer being on top line. Didn't like Rotter being there either. Both didn't really provide the two Michaels any help. The team being shut out wasn't an accident. Their goalie was good but shots does not equal chances, and a lot of shots were just thrown up into the goaltender's body.

More options for line adjustments are coming soon, we'll see the lines Saturday. Hopefully this game doesn't mean anything, but to be shut out by Slovakia B/C, the Riga tournament is to decide if we can face Slovakia A.

Well I've just read match reports and notes from a couple of sources so I guess you got me there. I usually get my hands on the tape afterwards. I don't think I'm going to put the piece on this one out until I get both tape and some more opinions from scouts.

And Pfeffer's strength was never preventing goals...though he has improved in that regard. One player I have interest in, #12 Urbanek.

Almost all the goals against the swiss were scored on the first line, Wimmer-Rossi-Unterweger. until Unterweger got thrown out for sending a kid to the hospital. Harnisch was also suspended for breaking a kid's arm. Kandemir was hurt prior, Pfeffer was on club duty I think. Rüdisser was probably the big revelation of the tournament.

Against Czech Republic, David Maier with a goal and assist, Julian Payer with an assist, Benjamin Baumgartner with a goal and assist, Benny Lanzinger in his second game back with an assist. Lukas Piff and Peter Sivec were -3 each on separate lines and Piff was on the PP unit that gave up the PP1 goal. Matteo Peskoller has really struggled as well, but we know he can be better. Meanwhile U16 beat Switzerland White 4-3, Philipp Wimmer with 3 goals, Dominik Unterweger now has 3 assists in the two games, Marco Rossi with a goal and second assist. Thimo Nickl from KAC also got an assist.

U16 was missing Jacob Pfeffer, the top defenseman in the class and really the only serviceable defender in class, and Adem Kandemir, the second best forward in the class. The 01' group isn't as good as the 00' class because the 01' class is mainly 3 prospects, insert massive gap, then Harnisch and Unterweger look ok. The 00' class did a little better against Russia because they're a complete class but they were missing Huber and Rebernig, two of the top 5 players in the class. Furthermore, the U17 keeps calling up poor defenders like Jonas Kail, Lukas Piff who are undersized and unexceptional and then Peter Sivec is the best player I've seen at turning the puck over and then Benjamin Rattensberger disappears the moment he gets on the ice but Lukas Jaunegg and Tobias Stiebl seemingly never get a chance. Good thing Jaunegg is about to receive some much deserved attention because he's really proven he can stay at home. 02' doesn't supplement the 01' team extremely well either, I felt Kai Hammerle should be on the team but he would not have been the difference. Lucas Thaler is way undersized to be going against elite competition and the two defenders Bruno Raab (good size) and Martin Urbanek (-4 vs. Germany) aren't getting any significant ice time. 00' and 01' work very well together. 01' and 02' do not work well together and 00' by itself is not extremely proficient either. Benjamin Lanzinger seems to have returned, good news in some respects, he didn't show up in the numbers and he's still listed 172 cm (5'8") so bad news. 00' is surprisingly a D-heavy class with some good forward power but without Lanzinger healthy and bigger and improved all the focus shifts to Baumgartner (thankfully he grew to 175 cm) and the Salzburg boys to make it big.

2nd Games without Germany would be a little problem for DEB i guess thats why they recruit every player if its the best solution ? maybe Mr. Brown joins again and do some stupid comments

I don't really get what you're getting at but I'll do my best to guess. First, Germany doesn't do player naturalization, they just have a lot of NHL players they are debuting. Some of the players are fairly old, but the combination is more lethal than ever before from a german team. Austria recruits (I don't know if that's the best word) every player within it's sphere as well like Vanek but Vanek wasn't "able" to participate. Mr. Brown? I don't know Mr. Brown but the saying is wise "one man's folly is another man's wisdom" and vice-versa...

Oliver Turan chose to represent Slovakia, though his brother Lukas has gone to Austrian NT camps. He was invited to the Slovakian U17 team to play in the U17 tournament. Slovakia lost 6-1 to Switzerland today, the same deficit as U16 teams against Austria last year but the latter was a 3rd period mental melt-down and the game today was a 60 minute obliteration. They barely slipped a weak Germany team this year, and lost 10-1 to the USA and 5-1 to the Czech Republic. In the Ivan Hlinka they did pull out against the Swiss but lost their other three games to finish 7th after an 8th place finish last year despite co-hosting the tournament for a second straight year. Turan finished with 2 PIM in 4 games.

Simply put we needed Vanek...this german team is so overpowered it's absurd. The one situation I see Austria winning is if we beat Latvia and they beat Germany in overtime. Then, we would only have to take Germany to extra time to win.

The only thing I was aware of was that he was eventually cut from the protected list, for one reason or another. I was also aware that he got a camp invite this summer, but this is his draft year and he still hasn't made a team. That's not to say he won't. NAHL is not a favorable option. I'm sure NCAA coaches are also monitoring him, but I'm not aware of any recruitment going on at the moment. As I pointed out, goalies have a higher overage draft rate than skaters, so I wouldn't be too worried. He is the most talented goalie prospect out of Austria since...before I got into Austrian hockey. I wrote in my most recent post a segment on him and the NT. On many levels his club and NT situations are messy, but the old saying "it's all eventually decided on the ice" I think is very true for him.

Maxi will play in the NAPHL 18U this upcoming season (barring a special phone call, unlikely), and then either straight to NCAA or one year in juniors (NAPHL generally feeds NAHL). He didn't do a great job at USHL camp a year ago and so he was left unprotected. One thing about drafting goalies, goalies are routinely drafted overage, such as Adin Hill. I'm sure he's on college radars, just needs to continue raising his stats.

Well for me Ganahl is probably a top 5 Austrian in the EBEL. He is going to be in the lines. M.Geier is also better than Rotter but I want to avoid putting him together with Ganahl, it seems intuitive that they would be good linemates because they play together at KAC but I watched them and they have good chemistry but are both finesse players more than power forwards which makes it hard to score against physical opponents. Herburger and Hundertpfund are both strong two way players and more effective offensively so in my book they are the grinder line. Oberkofler is a top PK player but has lost his scoring abilities, Netrik is another PK player who did score a goal off a Schiechl assist but otherwise even less of a scorer than his brother Betrik, Fischer is not significantly better than either two. I think Haudum gets a chance to play, not because he is better yet, I think he has elite speed so far and uses it but he still lacks in the physical aspects of the game, but I think there are a lot of expectations and excitement surrounding him. I think if going purely based off skill Haudum would sit and Ganahl will play on the 4th line (which would be the 3rd line) and Netrik joins Hundertpfund and Herburger on the PK line.

I'll take a crack at the depth chart:
    M.Geier - M.Raffl - Grabner
    T.Raffl - Komarek - Lebler
    Ganahl - Herburger - Hundertpfund
    Haudum - Hofer - Rotter

    Heinrich - Altmann
    Ulmer - Schlacher
    Bacher - Schumnig
    Vivieros - Unterweger

    Starkbaum
    Kickert
    Madlener

    Zitat von Haxo
Not offended at all, these are not "my" lines after all i did was just rank them and put the Koch line first since i believe he´s still our strongest centerman. Maybe just a bit tired of the convenience of flat/provocating postings (in this thread) and not expecting it from you.
Anyways yes you are right, these lines would make almost perfect sense to me, given the assumption no further signing to come (atleast for now). And i also am a friend of a balanced lineup, our goal will be to qualify for a top six spot this season and this will require a even spread of workload and securing points especially vs the weaker teams of the league. I agree completely with Kalt that we don´t have to care too much about Salzburg, we need to care about teams where we can lose points. And having a strong third line could be the advantage over the likes of e.g. Dornbirn who barely dress four (ebel)quality defensemen.
@Ganahl: did i put this wrong? He probably has one of the biggest noses (aside of Popovic) of the whole team.
I meant he would compensate Hundi´s lack of scoring ability. Lundmark is by far our best offensive player, and Ganahl should be the next one behind him when it comes to scoring touch imho (atleast aside of the new legios which i still have a bit of a hard time judging), but for some reason it seemed to me he had difficulties to be effective last season. Slotting him into a line with Koch and MGeier instead of Pance could work out well too, would you see him ahead of Pance for such a spot? I think i would prefer the energy and physicality Pance brings to this line, whereas Hundis phyisical presence could compensate much of Ganahls shaky style of play.

For Lundmark i think he needs a defensively responsible centerman who can make use of open space and dish, which i hope Hurtubise can bring to the table. Do you think this is not within his limits? If he fails on this (basically the same scenario we had just last year with Nordqvist...) we are in serious trouble imho. Koch can play with Lundmark (and he did in the past) but this leaves us with a mess offensively with the other lines.

    Alles anzeigen

I think Ganahl is better than Pance but it makes sense to have Pance on that line perhaps because Hundi is a good two way center and Koch is more offensive-minded, not as two-way. I always thought for some reason that KAC has a large budget, probably because they were a powerhouse. Hurtubise and Lundmark would probably work together but I think Hurtubise was brought in as a second-line player, and Stefan Geier is not incredible, if the goal is to beat Dornbirn then it works but that line would probably be underpowered against Salzburg. Bernd Freimuller mentioned KAC as one of the teams with legio spots left and I think there's probably one more forward slot left to be filled.
