Never fun to lose, but I thought the team played pretty good today. Great forechecking pressure, especially in the first two periods. Score two goals, and generated plenty of other chances. A lot of stupid penalties put their top line on the ice a lot. If today's performance can be copied against the other teams in the tournament then promotion should be pretty likely. Kazakhstan has some great Canadian players, with the lineup that is available I thought the quality and level of play was pretty high, and look forward to the rest of the tournament.

Wasn't that Komarek not Hofer?
Yes! That's two points for Thomas Raffl.

Looks like I spoke far too quickly

Strong forecheck and backcheck so far, good puck movement. Dumb penalties but if we keep playing like this we'll be in a good spot to win.

Wurschl has been injured with a collarbone. He's on a good recovery track but wasn't going to be able to make it. A lot of people felt given another questionable omission that a spot would be open and another Swedish defenseman would be a candidate, especially after scoring a lot in the 6 nations tournament. I personally felt there were two other U16 defensemen more equipped for the job, but in any case they were none of them considered, despite some standout performances like in Aalborg. Instead, only 7 Ds were chosen, and instead of those more qualified Ds a Defenseman who plays for the Defensive coaches' local team was selected. Not only was he selected, he's been playing on the top pairing, and I would have a difficult time describing his performance for lack of any kind things to say.

No it's not! And it's not your fault, I'm not angry at you, you have good reason to believe what you believe, but this is the depths of how truly and utterly inept not only Brucker but also the rest of the coaching staff has been.Let me tell you about this player pool (including players he cut for no good reason). Multiple players planning for the CHL next year? Check. Mulitple players headed to the USHL/BCHL next year? Check. Multiple players in Sweden? Check. Player headed to Sweden next season? Check. Player rumored to play a few NLA games next season? Check. Multiple Players who will play a number of games in the EBEL next year? Check. Multiple top 5 Elite Novizen PPG scorers? Check. None of those categories were overlapping.
Slovenia have two good players, Jan Drozg, and an average Finnish U18 league player Rok Kapel. Ukraine's top line center plays at Okanagan with one of our 3-4th line guys, and our 3-4th line guy scores more points. I could do the same comparisons for the Polish or the Italian team.
If you want to know why I've been probably overconfident that we would and should win then that's why. No team compares on paper, and hopefully as soon as this December when some of these kids hit the U20 team you'll be able to see what they can do. But the trademark of ridiculously poor coaching is exactly this, to take a talented team and make it look like a bad year. I'm absolutely sick of Brucker, I really am. I've seen this team underperform at every tournament all year, and then the kids go back and light the lamp in their club teams and I'm sick of it.

I'm sorry for those who don't care for statistics but this livetracker is absolutely ridiculous. On the Pusnik goal they gave assists to Stuckler, Wohlfahrt, when the first assist was obviously Lanzinger and the second assist Stuckler. A goal is a goal, but at least I still feel stats matter and it's insulting to the players who do score that they aren't awarded points.
-
Sorry on my part if there was a misunderstanding. I was just reacting to an exciting play. Marco Rossi is a good kid but I wouldn't consider myself biased on him, I've also been the one calling for accurate stats, including the two times he's been unfairly awarded assists.
Nice work killing the 5v3. Line 2's composition is very strange...I'm not a fan.

Slovenia and Italy are currently tied after two periods, if Italy can draw a point from Slovenia then the boys control their own destiny again.
I think the formation of the lines is obviously very sloppy. Lanzinger and Pusnik have the hardest shots on the team. On a team that lacks finishers I don't see why they're on the same line. One of my favorite guys on the team is Rene Trothan, hardworking blue-collar player, I think he has a ceiling somewhere around Niki Petrik. I could see shifting him up for Pusnik being effective. Ds is a bigger issue, especially considered how many are missing due to miscellaneous reason. I usually prefer bigger, physical Ds but the ice surface I hear is very poor and so yesterday I found myself wishing for a smaller, more mobile D like Piff. Ukraine is a chippy team, but with good passing the forwards will be able to dissect their system.
To the point @WiPe made, Patrick Stuckler who struggled heavily last game was playing in what I believe was his 84th match this season including games and scrimmages, club and international, so he is for sure exhausted.

Freimuller, in contrast to myself, is what you might consider objective. He doesn't work with parents or athletes on the junior circuit, he's a certified hockey expert who just dropped in to watch a few games. He posted his observation and you still took exception to his tweet. Perhaps it's lost in translation but I'm missing the point of contention, he basically tweeted out a box score.
Furthermore, I think it's hardly an observation to point out that a few players are with the agency that has a virtual monopoly on Austrian hockey talent. You could play the same observation game with the U20 or the Senior National Team.
I don't generally prefer working with parents. However, I do engage in tasks and services that could be seen as compromising my objectivity. I'm far more concerned with being right that being objective, and if I am at any point wrong in analysis please feel free to let me know. I wouldn't consider refraining from engaging in the tasks and services I engage in on the hope that I might be considered more objective.
Is hockey a team sport? Absolutely. However, I don't get the feeling this sentiment is echoed from an altruistic place. It's more than typical for any Game Day Thread to have prospect and statistical discussion as well.

Italy beat Austria 5-1 in St. Polten last November. 5 months later, same result. Brucker changed nothing tactically between the two games, so now we can sit here and scratch our heads and wonder why things didn't work.
Quick breakdown of the Austrian Junior Hockey Scene. Talented Vorarlbergers go to Switzerland. Talented Innsbruckers, Grazers, Linzers, and Dornbirners go to Salzburg. Talented Klagenfurters go to Sweden after developing in the AlpsHL. The losers in this are Villachers and Viennese. Villach being in Karnten though still gets some deference as far as visibility and transfers are concerned. Vienna not so much, but they're fixing their problems by acquiring a Mol Liga farmteam and building a new training facility. I'd be most concerned for Villach. The EBJL and EBYSL still play a role, both are good places to identify good U15 or U16 talent. Then there's the Okanagan Academy, which is a different animal in itself, but they have a creative way of using the EBYSL and it's produced some fine talent as well.
The problem is that there are a lot of high caliber forwards even still on this team after the inexcusable cuts, forwards with big impending transfers upcoming, and all signs suggest that these forwards haven't earned their transfers. Pusnik is absolutely a liability, but other forwards aren't really producing either. The team is incredible on paper, but all the lead up to the WM suggested that the Coaching staff wasn't really doing an effective job of preparing the team, making decisions, or utilizing players and their skills. So far, this has been the case.

They just lost their top D for the rest of the game. Lanzinger couldn't finish a wide open net from Rossi.

Poor Baumi. First goal I'm pretty sure was assisted by him, not Marco, but I know other players who had their points counted as Marcos have had to lobby the officials after the game to get their assists changed and Baumi doesn't come across to me as that type so I doubt that changes. Second goal I think he got a second assist as well. He has two assists but on paper he's been completely unproductive
-
For the record, Marco is 174 cm.
And for strong EBJL players watch the U16 NT, the level of the U18 NT is well above the EBJL and the worst players are the ones in the EBYSL. The best players employ their craft in Salzburg's rookie cup, Switzerland, or Sweden, and unfortunately it's reached a point where you expect for the EBJL/EBYSL kids to show up lacking something in the skills department.

Hungary was an "A Nation" last year, it's obviously not a good standard especially in a double-promotion/relegation system, I think people have a general cognizance of who the mid-majors and the mid-minors are. Some group by 6s, others group by 8s and these groupings are made by holistic review, no one groups the top 16 in a given year's tournament.
The game is frustrating for me, because to call it what it is, the Italian players individually on paper are horrible. How many players from the Italian squad would make the Austrian team? 3? And as I expected, the skill differential in this friendly became incredibly obvious in overtime. Individually, the Italian players can't really compare with the Austrian players, and when you go to a 3v3 setting in which the rink shrinks, players have more time, space, and the physical element really disappears it wasn't a contest. But for those 60 minutes of 5v5 the team really struggled to keep the puck in the offensive zone and at time struggled just as much to get it out of the defensive zone. On the boards and in the forecheck this team just really isn't getting there, and this isn't just something unique to the senior team. I don't know how to fix it. The problem is even worse at the junior levels, and that spells trouble for the future. I hate the idea some coaches push forward of "skill vs. strength/size", strength and size are an integral part of skill. This team has plenty of individual skill, individual speed, and they've been training together for a while now, they need to be able to generate pressure, physical pressure, on the offensive end to control and sustain possession.

An interview with Roger Bader. The entirety of the content is pretty good, however, here's an excerpt that is particularly interesting.
http://www.laola1.at/de/red/winters…ck-in-die-a-wm/

The "assist" was actually Zitz (#13), Rossi (#23) doesn't get any PP time from Brucker and it was a PP goal, he hadn't been on the ice for something like 3 minutes. 2 goals, the first one was especially nice. He stripped the D of the puck in the neutral zone and drove in and sniped it from the right side. Second goal was a rebound goal off a spinning backhand shot from Zitz. Baumi had a nice rebound goal I thought Zitz may have deflected the Schreier shot from the point. Maier's goal was a one-timer on the PP, great puck-movement, the powerplay scheme with Payr-Maier-Zitz-Baumgartner-Gehringer is working pretty well.
As I've said all along, there's no reason we shouldn't be promoted rather easily, the best other teams have one or two players on paper who would make the top 6/4 even with the watered down roster. Pride is dangerous, but promotion to me would be as impressive as Germany qualifying for the Euros...

No, SHL import rules count non-EU citizens as imports. Neither were his stats great for a local but perhaps he could find work. I hope he doesn't take the easy way back here, there are youngsters who need the opportunity.
Noah Welch maybe could be of interest to Austrian clubs though.

Previewing the 2016-17 Austrian U18 National Hockey Team: The In-Depth Review
https://authockeytxreports.wordpress.com/2017/04/11/pre…n-depth-review/ -
This may just be me, but I hardly believe successfully creating chances is an accomplishment against Poland, and that line in particular is notorious for being unable to finish chances created.
-
I'm going do go in depth with my thoughts on the team and the program on Tuesday, a little about the politics and the discord that's leading to the products on the ice. I'm not very happy to say the least. On paper there should be no competition but with coaching issues all things are possible.
-
Poland took game 1 by score of 4-1. Line 2 and D pairing 1 sat.
-
your understandig is right, but the EBJL Team is more a Team with Austrian/German Players and not that international than the rookies Cup Team.
i don't think there will be systematic changes, only the "regular" czech leage will be more "challenging" than rookies Cup i thinkThe difference will be negligible if even positive...
-
i am with you in the Point about the rookies Cup.my Information is that the u18 will Play in czech U18 league instead of rookies Cup next year.
rookies Cup/czech U18 is the "international Team" of the acadamy. In EBJL will Play the Austrian Players
Mmh, I don't quite see how that that improves the situation.
I'm not sure if something is being lost in translation but my understanding is that the rookie cup team is the A team and the EBJL team is the U16 development B team. Both are international, just one is generally younger and the other is generally better. Are you saying something systematic is changing for next season?
