I wasn't comparing year to year players, just players within a single year, which is what I think you're trying to say. It is impossible to compare a Marco Rossi to Mario Huber I agree...

    Zitat von starting sex

interessanter Ansatz, kannst mir bitte mehr dazu schreiben? was fehlt ihm in welchen Situationen und wo du dies festgestellt hast?

I personally have never gotten the feeling that he lacks in hockey sense. There is a general perception that bigger players lack hockey sense, and this is slightly more true for Max Rebernig who missed the cut, but I haven't perceived that Huber lacks anything there. The main weaknesses of Paul Huber are that he is soft, he does not use his body well for 6'2" 181, and is a poor skater. Respectfully, I don't think smaller forwards are the way to promotion either or we would've done wonderfully in the WM-18 this year. I watched all of all the 5 Minsk games, the forwards were too small so they were dispossessed of the puck with ease. If they had hockey sense, they never would have gotten the chance to show it because they could not hold on to the puck for more than one or two seconds...

Baumgartner and Rossi are great against U16 competition at maintaining puck control despite their size deficiencies by effective use of their body and also being extremely quick/explosive. Even at the next level this is perhaps harder to project however when the opposing team's defenseman has suddenly gained 15 pounds.

Ploner is a great prospect. I'm not sure he is 1.85 meters quite yet but he's big and strong. It does not seem he is as good as the other forwards in the class however. Still has a lot of time to develop, I'm very optimistic about him but so far he has merely been outshone. He played U20 because Innsbruck does not have a U18 team.

Wetzelsberger finally appeared in the last roster, the 6 nations tournament, and I was happy that he did. Played in Finland but played U16 and was around or below average. He has a lot of potential however and I could see him developing very well. It was good to see at the very end of the season that his talent was noticed and recognized.

Something I would be interested to see is Rebernig being promoted to the top line with Baumgartner and Rossi. The latter two play magic hockey haha, the old idiom "they move like they're on skates." Huber is a little too slow and too poor a skater to keep up with them right now but Rebernig would bring the size and power to win the 1v1 battles along the boards that Rossi and Baumgartner struggle to win as well as the speed to keep up with them. Rebernig has the biggest "freak" factor in the class, he is an incredible force of nature. Hockey IQ and technical skills are dubious but on line one he could do the dirty work for Rossi and Baumgartner and shoot when they pass to him in front of the net.

Report on the potential whereabouts of Dominic Zwerger

Also another kid for 01' is Florian Zajic, had the privilege to watch him play. He got recruited to Canada (CIHA) to play so he obviously has some talent. For now a 3rd line defenseman and will need a lot of work to make it to the next level where he can be either QMJHL or OHL drafted. He's not very good, but he has tools, apart from being 5'9" and 150 pounds already he is extremely defined muscularly, fits into his body well, needs a lot of technical improvement to crack the list, as well as midget play.

Even 6 months ago Rudisser would have been on the list, eclipsed by a rising Philipp Wimmer, still has better size than Wimmer and strong build, may factor again soon.

Beck is the coaches' son, unfortunately similar to how Goalies are rarely ranked high in the NHL prospect rankings, they are not going to receive deference to skaters with me either unless they are "can't miss." No guarantee he will be better than Kortin...Muller could perhaps be a measuring stick, but Muller is the pilot for an Austrian goalie with a Swiss license in the NLA. To be sure I take suggestions into consideration for the next rankings.

Came across an article written a few years ago by Hannes Biedermann
    http://derstandard.at/1350261052064/…achwuchstalente
What I always appreciated about Hannes was that he had a passion for writing about Austrian hockey and promoting Austrian hockey through literature, even though fundamentally we rarely agreed on anything, it was wonderful that literature was being published on Austrian players and prospects.

The largest and most irreparable disconnect between his opinions and mine were the size vs. skill discrepancy. This is evident in his top striker prediction: Johannes Bischofberger. The first time I saw Bischofberger (172 cm) I lost interest almost immediately, as his height and weight are in no way projectable to competitive divisions of hockey. Here he appears as the top offensive prospect in the region however, over players like Mario Huber, Marco Richter, Patrick Obrist and Valentin Leiler. Also other projections such as Phillip Zopf (175 cm) over David Kickert proved to be poor choices of skill over projectable size, though hindsight makes things much clearer...the gamble also paid off with Luka Gracnar (if Gracnar could be considered a gamble)

    Haha, I wish.

My thoughts going down the list.

Bernd has for years had a disdain for Felix Maxa, and this I never understood. No player has reminded me more of a poor man's Michi Raffl, not overwhelmingly fast or skilled but larger and assertive along the boards, which he uses to spring assists.

Yannick Pilloni is good but didn't improve much from last season to this season. I'm completely disillusioned with Daniel Obersteiner, EBEL 3rd liner at best. Not only as Bernd said is he inexplosive but also weak and too small a frame to project more muscle. His knock on Steffler is strength, but that should be easiest to correct...bring him to america we have weight training programs here if they're not in Austria...

This figure demonstrates why I like Alex Maxa:
    Felix Maxa (#5,97) 13/14: 18GP,1P >> 14/15: 41GP,44P
    Alexander Maxa (#4,99) 15/16: 11GP,3P >> 16/17: ???
A little smaller but more explosive than his brother, thought Bernd might like him more but no he's still a Maxa. Zitz was the most impressive player throughout the regular season, I have a hard time vetting against him. Bested Sam Witting in every category of league play.

Lanzinger...that debate will not fade. Bernd is not worried about his size because his dad was 6'2". I'm worried because he's 16 1/2, I don't know if his father had a late growth spurt but normally a child grows 2 cm after turning 17. Exceptions exist obviously...

Jacob Pfeffer...shows offensive potential but weak on D. It would be unlike me to project Pfeffer (160 cm) over Poschmann (178 cm)...

Word has it that Dominic Zwerger is indeed returning to Spokane, which baffles me to say the least, he has nothing to gain from another year of Juniors, except perhaps more time to get a qualifying AHL offer.

He wouldn't get a whole lot of Ice time as a rookie in any high-quality league

He will play some in the AHL next season as in at the end of the season he could sign a tryout contract as part of a 1 year deal which would maybe give him 10 games. Perhaps if he really beat up on the juniors he might earn a pro contract but the likelihood is also present that his production could peak lower than expected. I wouldn't preferred him to go pro by now, after a while there's more to be learned in the pros. Staying in juniors does maximize value for a while but eventually you have to be a rookie sometime

I've looked into the routes on this. For those two players specifically, I'll map the routes. Interestingly, 5 of the last CHL Import Austrians drafted have come from the EBEL/EBYSL system, and only one (Dominic Zwerger) from the Elite Junioren system. For the EBEL/EBYSL kids the path seems fairly simple, they're all at or around PPG in their draft-1 year. Exceptions exist obviously, Mario Huber would have been taken in his draft-1 but there were very serious questions about his character. Felix Maxa was a late-bloomer who struggled in international tournaments and came across as unathletic. Focusing on the draftability of the prospects playing in Switzerland however, the general trend is very similar. Around PPG in the Elite Junioren league in your draft-1 year is enough to warrant CHL attention. This is both true for Dominic Zwerger (17P in 21G) and Tim Bozon (29P in 27G), and Tim was drafted in the 3rd round next year after a good WHL season. Swiss players however have been known to be drafted with far inferior statistics. The basic conclusion is that to be CHL drafted in their draft-1 years the big prospects Frowis, Baumgartner, Payr, all have to at least be playing in the Elite Junioren league and the forwards are expected to be scoring at least at a .6 clip. Among defensemen the criteria is far looser and size is more telling, which Payr has, but he must at least be at the Elite Junioren level and preferably scoring at least a .3 clip. This is to get them their shots at playing in Canada and developing there. Now, to be straight drafted from the Austrian or the Swiss leagues is a different story.

I cannot remember the last time a foreign skater playing in the swiss junior system was NHL drafted. The only name that really comes to mind is Elvis Merzlikins, the Latvian goalie. That being said we can still look into what kind of stats it takes to be NHL drafted from the swiss system. Interestingly most of the swiss players drafted were not drafted from their domestic league, but that aside the player must play at least half his season in a professional league, the NLA or in some cases the NLB, and must have stats if even poor stats.

So for a Jannik Frowis or a Benni Baumgartner or a Julian Payr the route is simple. Play in the Elite Junioren league next year and at least half the season in NLA the year after, or play well enough to be CHL drafted to Canada and perform there. This is obviously a tall task. The beauty of this class for me is that it's a class, not a prospect. Rising out of this class I don't see the next Thomas Vanek, but I see Dominic Zwergers, Mario Hubers, and that's what Austrian hockey needs. One star prospect is a lot of fun to talk about, but one star without a supporting cast is Croatia, or Lithuania. In a few (maybe 8-10) years Marco Rossi may be a star, but he will mean nothing if he is not surrounded by top players like Jannik Frowis, like Benni Baumgartner, like Dominic Zwerger, like Lukas Haudum, and I think it's encouraging to see both in the 96-97 class and the late 99-00-01 class that these classes aren't defined by one class.

Does anyone know the nationality or international status of Devin Steffler? Kele Steffler represented Austria this past U18 WJC as a defenseman and is my #1 prospect for AUT98. His brother Devin is listed as American while Kele is listed as Austrian. Are they both dual-citizens? Is Devin's nationality status incorrect? Another Steffler surely wouldn't hurt. Kele came over the Austria after struggling to be competitive in the US leagues, as really is a product of the Austrian system, going from unknown to one of the best U18 players in a year. Devin seems to be doing slightly better in America but he's also swamped under the weight of heavy competition. Would Devin be eligible to play right away or would he need 2 years in Austria being a dual-national?

Just for fun, Top 5 (+1) for the AUT95 group.

    1. Layne Vivieros
    2. Valentin Leiler
    3. Max Reisinger
    4. Marco Richter
    5. Damon Puntus
    6. Thomas Vallant

The group was originally hyped heavily but a lot of heavy hitters have fallen out of the picture, while some very obvious gems were missed. Top 2 should be good players, middle two have a chance to be solid pros, bottom two will probably battle the fringe of playing top division professional hockey.

I won't be doing a new one until a little bit into the season, after all transfers are finalized and we've seen a bit of the players playing. That said the 01' group is pretty competitive. I have only one change scheduled for the 01' group currently and that's to push Jacob Pfeffer into 5th and Clemens Poschmann out. I have seen some tape of Schadl, I don't think he has competed for the U16 NT however. I have all the previous rosters downloaded and can go check but I believe only Rossi, Kandemir, Harnisch, Pfeffer, and Hochegger have. He also wasn't in the 01' group at the season kickoff event, but I think players chosen for that event were poorly chosen so I wouldn't consider that. Perhaps with a breakout season he will make the list but currently he's probably the 3rd defender in the age group, in a very strong year for forwards.

Oliver Turan chose to represent Slovakia, though his brother Lukas has gone to Austrian NT camps. He was invited to the Slovakian U17 team to play in the U17 tournament. Slovakia lost 6-1 to Switzerland today, the same deficit as U16 teams against Austria last year but the latter was a 3rd period mental melt-down and the game today was a 60 minute obliteration. They barely slipped a weak Germany team this year, and lost 10-1 to the USA and 5-1 to the Czech Republic. In the Ivan Hlinka they did pull out against the Swiss but lost their other three games to finish 7th after an 8th place finish last year despite co-hosting the tournament for a second straight year. Turan finished with 2 PIM in 4 games.
