Name:
Als Conn Smythe 1927 das Team kaufte, taufte er es in Maple Leafs um, weil er einst für einen Klub namens East Toronto Maple Leafs als Scout tätig war. Smythe, ein Veteran des 1.Weltkrieges, galt als sehr patriotisch, außerdem mochte er den Grammatikfehler im Namen.

Nicht mehr vergeben werden Zahlen von Spielern, deren Karriere bei den Leafs durch ein Unglück beendet wurde (Barilko – tödlicher Flugzeugunfall, Bailey – konnte auf Grund einer Kopfverletzung seine Karriere nicht mehr fortsetzen).
