    Hello people....

One question which might be a tiny bit OT.

KHL is very actual for Medveščak at the moment and many media and forum reports mention that KHL plans to form "new western division" which would include Poprad, Milano, Medveščak, Slovan Bratislava and Vienna Capitals (teams whos names i've read and heard about).

Whats your opinion as the Caps fans about that?

Here in Croatia we don't seem to be too happy about it. We'd become pure franchise without even slightest traces of home players. That's the main concern. Also away games for the fans would be extremely hard to do outside of our conference.

Would Caps fans be up for it if it happened?

if the contract with the khl would be for a long duration, why not? I like to see hockey with high quality, but I think the most fans want to see the teams from the EBEL.

Depends on what happening with the european league. I would still prefer this instead of joining KHL, but if there is no future for the european league i am also fine with the KHL.
But it will be interessting to see what are the exact plans. I cant imagine the league expanding to 40+ Teams (which will happen, if the push harder into central and northern europe), so i would say PRO KHL if the russians clean house and kick some of the financial troubled teams and make room for western european teams.

Personally i think Capitals and Zagreb should try to be top teams in EBEL before next step. I know playing in KHL would bring in more money and better players, but the teams must be far behind other KHL-teams.

    From Capitals perspective:
Dont forget that the KHL location Vienna could possible draw many players from the nationalteam currently not playing in Vienna (Trattnig, Setzinger, Koch, Brückler for example) and future nationalteam players (Komarek, Ulmer, etc). From this perspective its hard to compare the current Vienna Capitals with a possible "KHL franchise Vienna Capitals". But you are not wrong from your standpoint, which i can share to a degree.

Yes. That's the main issue our fans are having with this. Moving to KHL would probably mean almost completely new rosters for Medveščak and i believe for Caps as well. I'm not sure if that is what the fans would want.

Would say there is a difference, Vienna would claim the top austrian Players available like Koch or Setzinger. So this guys are not "really" new to the fans, while Zagreb allready owns the most of the top croatian players i would say.

What a great idea to discuss in English. I'm sure this will keep some "trolls" away :D

Back to topic: If the idea of a (Western) European league is going to fail, the KHL is definitely an opportunity to bring hockey in Vienna to the next level. The infrastructure is given by our new stadium and the size of the city. But I have doubts about the acceptance of international hockey in Vienna (biggest audience still shows up against other Austrian teams). On the other hand: If cities like Milan or Zagreb can make it, we sure can do the same.
But I think this is nothing to happen during the next few years. Rather a long term plan...

correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the salary cap a bit above 15 million euro in the KHL? (player contracts only).
how are vienna and zagreb to compete with that? lets assume both teams have currently about 3 million euro per year for player contracts,
which may not be that far off, i think. how are they to ever fill that gap?
besides the player contracts there's the general infrastructure for professional hockey - and there will be much to do as well for vienna and
zagreb if they join the KHL.
i think this budget difference of 10+ million euro is way too big for any EBEL team at present.

To join a league would of course generate more money into the teams. There are austrian companies who could use it as an entry to the russian market, and russian into Austria. To increase the budget with several millions would have gone very easy, but not to 15mill, thats probably too much.

The KHL would have to come up with some kind of "Hockey-Marshall-Plan". No other way for cities as Vienna, Zagreb or Milan to join. That's why I wrote this is nothing to happen too soon.

Damir Gojanović who is Medveščak president mentioned that we would need at least 10 million euros and that we would receive some Russian sponsors (Gazprom or Lukoil probably). Fans here are very sceptical about long term plans with that. Without strong domestic sponsor its a giant risk to rely only on Russian sponsors with which you never know what is going to happen.

Here are some articles on this subject from past few months:

    http://www.nacional.hr/clanak/119857/…dina-medvescaka
    http://www.vecernji.hr/sport/hokej/se…a-clanak-323880 (caps are mentioned here)
    http://www.24sata.hr/hokej/prodali-…navijaca-244182

I'm surprised that no one is mentioning Red Bull in this context.

    http://www.hrhokej.net/component/apol…eaka-u-khl.html

Poll about our entrance.. 60% of the fans are against it. Heh.. bit weird but it makes sense.

    .

Red Bull are the main force behind a Euro Hockey League. To join KHL would be a big defeat for them. Not for the icehockey club of Salzburg, but for Red Bull as company.

i guess the brand red bull is not really interested in the russian market at the moment

personally i can't imagine the capitals to leave EBEL within the next 3 years

according to this source: http://www.dinamoriga.eu/en/news/view/s…-clubs-revealed and http://www.hockeyfans.ch/news/meldung/27231 the budget or salary cap can be higher or lower than the 15 million euro... i don`t think that either caps or medvezak could bring a budget close to 15 milion euro in the near future...
