No Gratton for Capitals, means 1 center in the squad and a total of 13 players...

All these injuries will result in more injuries. It might be cruel, but please cancel the contract of some of the injured players and sign some new players. It is dangerous to play with such a short number of players over a longer time of period.

Maybe Björnlie plays center in the 2nd line and Riener is 5th defender.

    Werenka-Casparsson
    Kranjic-Bouchard
    Riener

    Lebeau - Gratton - Nageler
    D. Rodman - Björnlie - Draskotwin
    Draskotwin - Selmser - Teppert.

But I think almost any lineup is possible because Bjornlie, Bouchard and Riener can switch positions. Maybe Gaudet wants to spread out the scoring and plays with Gratton-Lebeau-x + Rodman-Nageler+x.

    Nicht unmöglich.

(Off topic: Interesting that you write Björnlie with an ö. It is clear that he has some scandinavian influence on his name. Bjørn/Björn means bear in norwegian and "lie" is valley. Daniel Bearvalley. Also Alex Westlund has a scandic last name. Maybe i should recommend them to the norwegian national team :) )

Anyone want to guess the Capitals line up?

The main question is: Wer ist der dritte center?

    Werenka - Casparsson

    Bjornlie - Bouchard

    Kranjc

as the 5 defenders im guess. Possibly Riener and Bouchard as forward..but doubt that.

    Lebeau - Gratton - Nageler

    Teppert - D. Rodman - Draskotwin

    Draskotwin - Selmser - Riener.

Who else that David Rodman can possibly play center? Bjornlie? Bouchard?

In fact it is: KAC vs Gratton. I think Gratton has a fair chance 8)

    Ist die Frage ernstgemeint?

    Besser ist +

    Danke.

It was an honest question, as 2+ could indicate that it is closer to a number higher (+) than 2, and therefore be a worse mark than 2. But it could also indicate that it is a good (+) version of the 2.

Mostly I agree with your grading, but:

    17 Lukas Draschkowitz: 2
Doesnt seem to be ready for EBEL.

I think, he is ready allright & will prove it soon. I saw him in a pre-season match and he was rather good there (better than his brother), but then he got injured on the hand and could'nt play fo weeks.

    13 Patrick Lebeau: 1
God, how bad he was before the injury! Must come back after this injury or else his career is over. Capitals should consider options here.

As far as we know, he sufferd a lot of pain playing before his ellbow-operation, so that might be the reason for his poor performance.

As to Gaudet : for me he definitely is a good coach. Just look at what he makes them play - a handfull oldies and a handfull youngsters!

He can not afford Judex or Lederer for another year - they had their chances for two years. That's enough, because there is no Farm-Team where they could try and try and try ...And this is not Gaudet's fault !!

    [winke] Eva

P.S. Where are you from in Norway - it's a wonderfull country. I spent my holidays there three years long, travelling the whole country up and down - amazing.

    Alles anzeigen

You could very well be right about Lukas, but Lebeau is soon 40 years old. Even if he comes back from this injury, what is next? He doesnt strike me as a player who has a great natural fitness or strength. I will not be surprised if the 4 points on Lebeau is used on a new player in january...

Gaudet..Gaudet..what to say? After i went to KAC and VSV on the away trip i was impressed, he is a better coach on away matches than at home. His plan about playing deep and go for quick counter attacks worked to perfection. But there are 2 worries i have:

    - The playoff games is a different sport than to play Jesenice (no disrespect) in a league match. Last year Capitals almost went out against a very average Graz team and was humiliated against Salzburg. I couldnt see any signs of any good coaching (apart from one time out in match 5 against Graz).

    - The matches against KAC and Salzburg. Gaudet has a very poor record against both of these teams in his time in Vienna, BUT 2 wins in a row against RBS and last against KAC...maybe things are turning and he is starting to solve the mystery how to play against them. That said, the quality of these 2 teams this seasoin cant be compared to last year.

Capitals play a very atractive hockey at home (maybe a bit too naive?) and some of the players Gaudet has brought in has been outstanding, so it is not all bad, but i doubt he will ever lead Capitals to success in the final.

Anyway..norway! I come from a place close to Stavanger on the south west coast. Not far from the Preikestolen (norw. für Kanzel oder wörtlich Predigtstuhl). If you havent been there yet, pay that area a visit :) http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preikestolen

Stavanger is of course the home of Viking Stavanger, who beat Austria Wien in the UEFA cup 2004 and of the icehockeyteam Stavanger Oilers :)

But still - you have to admit - the Caps' Plastik-Experience is better. Especially down 2:0 nothing against the leader, with barely 2 lines and still winning it. This team has balls... Plastik-Balls made of steal. And they will prove it this year in the playoffs.

Cant agree 100% with this one, yes young players have a hard time playing at his roster. But Teppert has shown that even a "low-skilled" (no offense on tino, i really like this guy for working so hard) midage austrian player got his chance. But if you are in a team coached by gaudet you really have to go 120% especially as a young gun. Imho Nageler exactly did this.

Yes, Teppert is one player who has been given the chance. Judex and Lederer i think will disagree with you...But maybe Gaudet is changing too, it is not possible to be succesful with 2 good lines, a poor 3rd line and a non-excisting 4th line. This year he has been forced to give the youth a chance..and they have taken it!

Here are my marks for the players. From 1-6, 1 being worst, 6 being best. Not the crazy austrian way...when is ever 1 best on the dice?? :)

    Goalies:

    35 Frederic Cassivi: 4.

91,49% is not bad and has had some very good matches. But he also seems to do weird things. I like Cassivi and i think he can be a very good goalie in the playoffs, but for now 4. Closer to 5 than 3.

    30 Rudolf Hummel: No Mark

Only played 40 minutes. 40 perfect minutes. Hopefully back from injury soon and will get to play against lower ranked teams at home.

    Defence:

    24 Darcy Werenka: 5

He might be old and slow, but what a player Werenka is. Has been very important in the last matches with all the injuries and is excellent to play along Schweda or Riener. 19 points on 20 matches is very nice too.

    20 Peter Casparsson: 5

I am not a big Casparsson fan, i dont really understand his game always, but so far this season it has been very effective. Not elegant, but get things done and is +9 so far.

    8 Francois Bouchard: 4

Had a very good early season, disappeared a bit, but has lately been good again. Also very important in the injury crisis and has played forward lately. Is one of the worst players on the +/- stats.

    28 Dan Bjornlie: 4

Excellent defender, but not at his best so far. Also too much injured.

    4 Philippe Lakos: 4

One fight, one win. Maybe not the defender you see the most, but is doing things easy and is +10. Has made a nice comeback in Wien.

    38 Ales Kranjc: 3

Has not been as good as i expected. Seem to be a bit on the way back into form.

    2 Peter Schweda: 3

Finally looks like he is comfortable on the ice in EBEL. Maybe these injuries was a blessing in disguise for him?

    19 Josi Riener: 2

I gave up on Riener after his two 2min penalties within 4:05 against Graz...useless! Looks to have come back from that, but need some time to convince me.

    Defender/Forward:
    40 Tino Teppert 3

I like Tino, but he is for sure not very effective! 200 matches and one goal... Of course he role is not to score goals, but it wouldnt hurt :) Seems to have got rid of some of the stupid errors from last year and looks to head for good season.

    Forwards:

    25 Benoit Gratton: 6

Incredible start to the season. Has to play with players that are not close to his league, still manage to run the team on his own. Very strong and +17 shows how important he is.

    6 Rafael Rotter: 5

Like a wind on the wing. Here there fucking everywhere. The first matches were not so good, but has lately a very good record and when he hits on the passes he is very important for the team. Not a natural born goalscorer.

    16 Daniel Nageler: 5

Come from nowhere and is top goalscorer in the team. Bargain of the season!

    12 David Rodman: 4

Much better start to the season than brother Marcel. Been very important for the team in the crisis and seem to come closer to the big form

    29 Sean Selmser: 4

The glue in the team. Extremely important short handed and has done a good job with the youth in his lines. Dont understand why he gets to play so much PP tho (at least not before the injuries)

    47 Harald Ofner: 4

Hard working and get things done. Will be an important player in the season.

    7 Kevin Kraxner: 3

Very quick...but...does it ever happen anything? Not so often...hard working, but not in Selmser or Ofners class.

    22 Marcel Rodman: 3

Disappointing start to the season, never looked his best. Hopefully he can come back from the injury now and improve his game.

    77 Christoph Draschkowitz: 3

Seem to have settled in better than his brother and has EBEL level on his game.

    44 Marc Tropper: 2

Not good when he players before his injury. Never close to last years form. Need to improve or else Capitals whould consider other options for him.

    17 Lukas Draschkowitz: 2

Doesnt seem to be ready for EBEL.

    13 Patrick Lebeau: 1

God, how bad he was before the injury! Must come back after this injury or else his career is over. Capitals should consider options here.

    86 Christian Dolezal: No mark

Not been on the ice...will he play this season?

She isnt completly wrong imho. Everyone knows that he has short temper and is someone who can lay out some heavy hits, sometimes a bit beyond the rules.
But its something normal for me to send some guys after this type of player. Its easy to get him out of the game, just provoke him until he explodes ending up fighting. Maybe you loose one player due this action, but at the same time you get of an opponent key player. Which coach wouldnt try to do so?

For example -> Caps @ VSV: Lakos vs Ferland, it was an intelligent decision by Lakos to accept the fight. Losing him didnt hurt as much as Ferland did for Villach.

You are absolutely right, but it is dangerous for Capitals to have a potential "bomb" as their most important player. All the other teams will know this and go for Gratton in the playoffs..either to make him fight or to make him injured. And with the current situation of centers in Capitals it would be almost impossible to win a playoffseries without Gratton on at least 90% performance. Both offence and defence would hurt a lot if Gratton went missing...he has been on the ice on 4 goals against in 15 matches...an incredible number.

When you lose a player like Lebeau is only affects the offensive part...Personally i think Capitals shouldnt wait for Lebeau to become well again, get in a new player. He is too old anyway.

I like him very much and imo he is the MVP of Vienna Capitals.

    [winke] LG Eva

By all means, i didnt mean to imply that Gratton is stupid...he just is over-hard sometimes, which i think he might regret in th playoffs when the other teams will try to injure him (like Graz did to Lebeau last season).

Personally i love Gratton and i would give up a kidney for him, but i dont always agree with his choices. He might be the best player in EBEL, he doesnt need to do things like that, it shouldnt be his role in the team.

Benoit Gratton did not receive a fighting major.

Finally someone opened this thread with this question!

I can tell you one thing, Vienna Capitals will never be meister with Kevin Gaudet as the coach.

The positive side: He does get some good players to the club.

    The negative sides:
    - he never learns! How many times are Capitals going to lose the 3rd period against KAC or Red bulls before he realizes something is wrong?

    - The use of the same players...again and again and again and again...No wonder they get injured.

    - Tactically nowhere near what it takes to have success in the playoffs.

    - Completely uninterested in developing young players.

    - Seems to be very controlled by the leading players in the group. Werenka, Selmser, Gratton...

It is sad to see so many good players without a plan as it was yesterday in 3rd period. Clueless.

    Very poor start from Capitals.

One player is missing and suddenly the whole idea of 4 lines goes away? Doesnt make sense. It it impossible to hope for an injuryfree season. I think Gaudet is living in a fantasyworld sometimes.

I think Lebeau is very close to the end of his career. Werenka is slower than my grandmother and Tropper looked very out of shape.

Luckily 53 matches to go...it was the least important match of the season, but Capitals will never win anything with Gaudet, i gave up today (again;))
