Wings trade Leino to Flyers
ZitatAlles anzeigenWith a number of injured forwards nearing a return to health, the Detroit Red Wings were left with too many quality players and not enough space to play them.
To ease the backlog, the Wings on Saturday traded left wing Ville Leino to the Philadelphia Flyers for defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and a fifth-round pick in the 2011 Entry Draft.
The Wings signed the undrafted Leino in the summer of 2007 following a stellar career in the Finnish Elite League. In 2007-08 he had 28 goals and 77 points in 59 games with Jokerit, and was named league MVP.
He spent most of last season with the Wings’ AHL team, the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he scored 46 points in 57 games, good for fifth on the team. He then led the club in scoring in the playoffs with 13 points in 10 games..
In 13 NHL games, he had 5 goals and 9 points, and he had 2 assists in seven playoff games.
This season, though, he wasn’t producing at the same rate, with just 4 goals and 7 points in 42 games, and he had been a healthy scratch the last six games. To get him to the AHL, the Wings would have needed to put him through waivers and chance losing him for nothing.
Instead, they dealt him to the Flyers for Tollefsen, who had become expendable with the recent signing of Lukas Krajicek. Tollefsen has fought a number of injuries this season, including a concussion and sprained knee, and has just 2 assists in 18 games. He also was selected to play for his native Norway at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Brian Burke's son dies in car crash in Indiana
ZitatAlles anzeigenBrendan Burke, the youngest son of Toronto Maple Leafs President and General Manager Brian Burke, died Friday after a traffic accident in Indiana.
"We are saddened to report that Brendan Burke, the youngest son of Leafs President and General Manager Brian Burke, succumbed to injuries he suffered in an auto accident earlier today in Indiana," the Leafs said in a statement. "The family asks for privacy at this difficult time."
Richard Peddie, president and chief executive officer of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, issued the following statement:
"On behalf of the entire Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Brian Burke. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Burke family during this extremely difficult time."
Commissioner Gary Bettman expressed his and the NHL's condolences."The National Hockey League grieves tonight for the family and friends of Brendan Burke, a young man of courage and character," he said in a statement. "Words simply cannot express our sorrow over his loss. We send our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to Brendan's father, Brian; his mother, Kerry; everyone in Brendan's family and all who were inspired by his love for hockey."
Burke is also the general manager for the United States team at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
"Our heart goes out to Brian and his family in this very difficult time," USA Hockey executive director Dave Ogrean said. "We know the prayers of the entire hockey family, including our Olympic Team, are with the Burke family."

Waddell: Kovalchuk talks at an impasse
Zitat
Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell released the following statement Thursday afternoon regarding contract talks with winger Ilya Kovalchuk."Our goal from the start of this negotiating process was to sign Ilya Kovalchuk to a long-term contract. During the process, Kovy affirmed his desire to be a Thrasher for life. We’ve spent several months exploring scenarios with Kovy and his agent to reach a mutually beneficial agreement, and offered many lucrative packages in an attempt to meet his financial objectives. Unfortunately, we’ve reached an impasse and at this point he has declined all of our proposals and we can’t reasonably go any higher.
"Ultimately, we offered Kovy more than $101 million over 12 years, which would have been the highest contract signed by an impending unrestricted free agent in the history of the league. If accepted, this contract would have been the second highest offer ever to any NHL player. We also met his desire to be the highest paid player based on average annual salary with a separate offer of 7 years at $10M per year ($70M). This offer is $0.5M higher per year than any other player.
"If we went beyond these offers, we would not be able to retain the young players on our roster when it came time to sign them, or invest in other top tier players needed to assemble a truly competitive team. Therefore, we are aggressively exploring all of our options as we move forward.
Also lassen wir ihn einfach herumkurven?
Hitchcock out, Nolen in

Knee injury to sideline Cammalleri 6-8 weeks
The Olympic break could not have come at a more opportune time for the Montreal Canadiens. That's because the Canadiens, 10th in the Eastern Conference with 56 points, will be forced to carry on without the services of leading scorer Michael Cammalleri for the next 6-8 weeks.
According to published reports, Cammalleri suffered an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee in a loss to the Senators on Saturday. The Olympic break, which is slated Feb. 13-28, means the Canadiens will be without their star center for a minimum of 14 games, including the next seven contests prior to the break.
Cammalleri was injured on a check by Ottawa defenseman Anton Volchenkov midway through the third period of a 3-2 overtime loss. He was seen leaving Scotiabank Place on crutches and wearing an inflatable cast on his right leg that remained stiff as he walked.
"I'm hoping it's not too bad," Cammalleri told the Montreal Gazette after the game.
In addition to Cammalleri, who leads the team with 26 goals and a plus-10 rating, forward Andrei Kostitsyn, who suffered a knee injury Dec. 30, isn't due back until after the Olympics.
