Tonight , Sabres fans will be looking for some “old time hockey, Toe Blake, Eddie Shore”, with the Boston Bruins and Milan Lucic in town.
If only they could suit up Rob Ray and some of his buddies from the 1991-92 team.I was going through a recent HN and they are doing a series of articles to help sell a new book called “Hockey’s Most Amazing Records.” As I turn the page to the story, there’s a picture of a half naked Roby Ray. That’s right, nothing on his upper body. Those were the days when you didn’t have to tie down the jersey.
I didn’t know this but the Buffalo Sabres are in the NHL record books for the most penalty minutes by a team in a single season. The 91-92 group checked, fought and misconducted themselves to 2,713 PIM’s and the record still stands
The fan favorite Ray led the pugnacious group with 354 minutes(which by the way is the 21st highest single season total for a player in league history). Then 19 year old rookie Brad May wasn’t far behind, rolling up 309 minutes. Gord Donnelly was also a member of the exclusive “300” club with 305 penalty minutes. Just how nasty were those guys? Even Pat LaFontaine, 1 of the nicest pro athletes you will ever meet, even Patty had 98 minutes, a career high for him.Buffalo averaged 34 penalty minutes a game, rang up a total of 91 fights and were whistled for misconducts 60 times. Who did they think they were, the Main Street Maulers? The funny thing is that team also had some incredibly talented offensive players. LaFontaine topped 40 goals and 90 points that season as did Dave Andreychuk. Alexander Mogilny and Donald Audette both had 30 goal seasons. Dale Hawerchuk had 23 goals and led the team with 98 points. Buffalo had the league’s best power play and ended up 8th in scoring.
Yet that blend of toughness and talent could only produce 74 points due in part to sub standard goaltending. Coach Rick Dudley was fired during the season and replaced by John Muckler. The Sabres would make the playoffs and lose to Boston in the first round. They did rally from being down 3-1 in the series and forced a 7th game only to see Dave Reid flutter a shot past Tom Draper for the series winning goal. So Rob, if you’re listening, give your buddy Brad May a call and be ready to go if no one jumps Lucic tonight.

Top goaltender Ryan Miller has been out since the Sabres' last tilt against the Boston Bruins, and the head coach provided an update on him Tuesday.
"Ryan's feeling better," Ruff said. "Every day is a little bit different. I think you get in these situations and you really don't know. You could have a bad night's sleep and think it's something else, so a lot of times it's tough. He's doing better. I talked to him on the way in and I talked to him on the way out. He's in good spirits, and I think he's progressing."
Tyler Ennis did not skate with the team Tuesday. Ruff telling reporters that the forward was sore after they ramped up the workload on him last week. He concluded that Ennis is "not quite there yet."

I hab jetzt schon Angst vor MI - weil die Sabres eben solche Softies im Vergl. zu den Bruins san und vorne einfach mit wenigen Ausnahmen schlicht unvermögend. Hoffentlich san am MI wieder einge (alle) der derzeit angeschlagenen Sabres wieder fit. Cool wär auch wenn Miller bald wieder mal im Kasten stehen würd - obwohl - gegen die Bruins hätt i derzeit eh lieber den grds. in Form spielenden Enroth ... -
konnte gestern ja das Game nicht live sehen und musste mich jetzt mal vorerst mit den Highlights, den Interviews und den online Zeitungsartikeln begnüngend.
Aber aus all diesen Quellen geht eines ganz klar hervor: "Wie zum Teufel kannst du so ein Spiel verlieren?" Die musst ja förmlich aus der Halle schießen! Da waren ja eeeeinige 100%ige dabei! Vanek MUSS allein mindestens eins machen.Leck echt - aber anscheinend gibts halt solche Abende wo einfach nix rein will.... bei den Sabres leider zu oft !!!!!

Alle (angeblich Fans via Twitter, Medien usw) haun auf die Sabres hin, dabei sans ja derzeit immerhin 2. im Osten...und haben 12 wins (highest mit den Hawks)

In my mind I think the point should be that the Sabres lead the NHL in wins with Ryan Miller slumping as of late, Tyler Myers until the last two games, Ville Leino playing poorly much of the time still looking for chemistry. Christian Ehrhoff average at best, Drew Stafford playing poorly most nights and Derek Roy trying to play through a hamstring injury and hurting the team more than he helped it. I think the thought should be think of what this team might do when most of these problems are solved.
