    Interessanter Bericht von nhl.com

Thomas Vanek knows what it's like to win a championship in Buffalo and he likes the feeling.

"I've won one championship already in Buffalo and I hope there will be more to come."

Vanek was referring to the NCAA Division I Championship won by the University of Minnesota back in April of 2003 at Buffalo's HSBC Arena. Buffalo was host of the 2003 NCAA Frozen Four.

Vanek was subsequently chosen by the Buffalo Sabres as their No. 1 draft pick, the fifth player taken overall, in the NHL Entry Draft in Nashville, that same year.

Vanek is now in his first year with the Sabres. After playing two seasons at the college level, the left winger turned pro last season and played the entire 2004-05 season with the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. There, Vanek ended up scoring 42 goals and 26 assists in 74 regular season AHL contests.
Vanek's promotion to the Sabres seemed like a no-brainer.

"He had to earn a spot on the team," stated Sabres head coach, Lindy Ruff. "Nothing was going to be handed to him."

But the rookie forward has made the adjustment to the NHL without much trouble.

"We got off to a pretty good start as a team," Vanek said. "I've had a lot of good chances since coming to the Sabres.

"I think the experience I had last year in Rochester was great for me. I think the AHL of last year was a great league. Because of the lockout, we had a lot of real good players all year playing with us. That wouldn't have happened in a normal season.

"A lot of those guys are up playing in the NHL this year," he said. "The biggest difference I've noticed this year are the defensemen. They're a lot bigger and smarter on the ice here at the NHL level. And things are a bit faster up here as well."

Western New York fans attending the Frozen Four will remember Vanek. The 6-foot-2, 208-pound freshman left winger from Vienna, Austria led the U. of Minnesota to their second consecutive NCAA title. The 21 year-old Vanek was named the Most Outstanding Player at the Frozen Four. It capped off a year that saw the right handed shooting Austrian become the first freshman in 48 years to win the U. of Minnesota MVP award, scoring 31 goals and 31 assists in 45 regular-season contests. He led the Gophers in playoff scoring with seven goals and four assists for 11 points.

For Vanek, making the NHL is a dream he has had since he was three years old in his native Austria.

"I was pretty relaxed sitting there," said Vanek, referring the moments leading up to his selection by the Sabres. "There were some great players selected ahead of me.

"I'm happy I'm in Buffalo. I love the rink there. I've won a championship there already. We'll see what is going to happen now."

What happened to Vanek was that he went back to the University of Minnesota for one more season. Then last summer he decided he could turn pro and play for the Sabres farm team, the Rochester Americans.

"I sat down over that first summer with coaches from both the University of Minnesota and the Buffalo Sabres and made the decision that was best for me. I didn't want to make the wrong move and then sit and not play the way I should for the whole year. I needed to develop and play a lot of games and get better somehow.

"It's was a tough decision going back with Minnesota for that last year. Basically the whole team was coming back. We were all excited about a three-peat. Unfortunately that didn't happen.

"I knew that I wanted to come back. But at the same time my dream was to move on a play in the National Hockey League. That's why I did what I did because I it was going to be best for me as a player."
    Thomas Vanek
For Vanek, making the NHL is a dream he has had since he was three years old in his native Austria.

Ruff is very impressed with Vanek.

"He's just got that knack around the net," Ruff said. "He finds ways to score big goals.

"It was exciting to watch him play during the Frozen Four. He just seems to have that ability to lift his team when it is needed. We're hoping he'll be able to do that with us.

"Obviously he's a little more mature than some of the other guys taken in that draft. He's a year closer than some of these guys. And that makes a big difference. In college hockey he was playing with kids that are older and more mature. In junior hockey he could have been playing kids that were 16-years-old. With that I think he's a step ahead of a lot of these players.

"I think that Thomas, like many other players his age, will have to work on his defensive game a little more. Once that comes together, there is no doubt that he will be the complete package."

That is why Sabres GM, Darcy Regier made Vanek such a high priority when he was drafted.

"There is no doubt that this young man has a lot of talent," Regier said. "He is a natural when it comes to goal scoring."

Rochester head coach, Randy Cunneyworth, was very impressed with the play of Vanek last season.

"I just like the way he battles for the puck when he is any place around the net," Cunneyworth said. "There is no doubt that he has the skill to score goals. But it's how he scores them that is more impressive. He just doesn't quit. He's not afraid to stick his nose in the middle of battle and give a little push to the opposition. He shouldn't have a problem making it with the NHL."

What about scoring those big third period goals?

"Every team I've ever played for, I've always seen myself as one of the go to guys," Vanek said. "If we were down a goal or up a goal, and we needed more offense, I think the coaches looked to me and my linemates. And we usually stepped up to that situation quite often. I guess it was a good spot to be in."

For Vanek, it's also important for him as an Austrian to have been chosen this high in the draft. Vanek is the first Austrian to be selected in the opening round of the Entry Draft.

"Back home it's more soccer, tennis, skiing, so hopefully little kids back home recognize that kids from Austria have a chance to make it hopefully in the National Hockey League," Vanek said. "Hopefully this has a little bit of an impact and hockey is going to get bigger there. I'm really nothing over there (as far as being a celebrity goes). I think there's a few years to go for myself before I make a name for myself. Maybe then they'll recognize me."

Vanek now lives in North America, after moving from Austria almost eight years ago.

"When I was 14-years-old I knew it was time to move on, as far as my hockey career was concerned," recalled Vanek, whose parents, Zdenek and Jarmila, and brother, Dave, still reside in Austria. "We had a few friends living in Canada.

"It was tough coming over here. I really didn't know the (English) language and didn't have many friends over here. It was tough for the first few months. But I had a great host family in Canada. They helped a lot."

After playing Midget Double-A hockey in the Red Deer, Alberta area, Vanek moved on to Rochester, N.Y. where he stayed for seven weeks. From there it was on to Sioux Falls of the United States Hockey League, where he played two seasons. And, from there, Vanek moved to the University of Minnesota.

It seems as though everything in hockey that Vanek has set his sights on, he has hit his target right on. Buffalo and the NHL was that last goal.

"I've waited all summer for this season to begin in Buffalo," concluded Vanek. "Right now I'm just concentrating on playing for the Sabres. Now that I've gotten to the NHL, I want to stay here for awhile."
