The good news, the other teams in D1A are weak. The bad news, Coach doesn't seem to know how to create a roster.

To be fair, we were missing: T. Raffl, M. Raffl, Grabner, Vanek, S. Ulmer, Heinrich, Obrist, Lange, Starkbaum, Lebler, Nodl, Herburger, Komarek, Schumnig, Schlacher, Hundertpfund.

Tournament and Prospect Recap: Just my opinion, but Dieter Werfring and Rick Boehm need to be fired. It was no coincidence that the only team Austria could defend was Germany. The kids are taught to pass to spots or locations as opposed to other players. The expectation is that when you pass to a spot your teammate will show up there and win the 1v1 battle for the puck but that was almost never the case because they were either too small (AUT) or slow (GER). Because of this every time either team got the puck they turned it over immediately by passing to no one or to an opposing player. Tactically, neither team had a chance to succeed, and it was very sad to see the boys very frustrated by the fact that their passes always ended up in the hands of opposing players. The boys deserve better, the fans deserve better, this is simply a case where Dieter Werfring must go, in my opinion, even though I would be surprised if he was actually let go.

Prospects: Thomas Winkler (3G, 6 SOG) had a strong showing early on with his shot. He is the only player on the team with a good hard shot, however, doesn't have much else. Martin Goritschnig (2A, 5 SOG) handles the puck too much, not an intelligent passer, often is not where he needs to be, physically the most solid defender. He shows upside but still has a long way. Kele Steffler (1A, 7 SOG) third most shots on goal for the team. Good at positioning himself for good shots but unfortunately has a weak shot that is also at times inaccurate. Best defender at dispossessing opponents of the puck and stopping the break but did get called for a few bad hooking penalties. Solid skater but an uncreative passer, needs to handle the puck more instead of settling for backwards passes. Samuel Witting (4A, 10 SOG) lead points and shots on goal. Needs to get bigger, but effective on the powerplay. Takes some stupid penalties and doesn't have an effective shot. Still a work in progress but by far the most consistently effective forward for Austria. Daniel Obersteiner (2A, 6 SOG) was awful, completely invisible in a few games, lost nearly all of his faceoffs. Was completely outmuscled, forced off the puck almost every time he got it. Did not posses a hard or accurate shot. Was slow to get to the puck at times, occasionally did demonstrate some puck control skills. Before the tournament I thought based on his work at KAC he could perhaps go overseas next year, while it is still possible, he definitely is not skilled enough to do so. Julian Pusnik (1G, 4 SOG) was far more promising, also Alexander Maxa (1G, 1A, 6 SOG) showed the promise his brother showed prior but perhaps a little more explosive and Marcel Zitz (1G, 1A, 3 SOG) made his case very effectively at times as well and showed good hockey IQ. Jakob Holzer (4.48 GAA, 87.70%) and Daniel Polzl (2.59 GAA, 90.48%) were very forgettable, I am still baffled why Maximilian Haselbacher was not even considered for camp. Fabio Artner deserves some consideration, if only for his game against Belarus, size is still a problem.

Overall a rough tournament but ascent is quite likely next year.

Norway Win in regulation and Austria only needs one point. Norway overtime win and Austria only needs 2 points. France regulation win and Austria needs 2 points. France overtime win and Austria needs all 3 points.

    Key to the Game: Kazakhstan
    1. Execute the gameplan: So far the team has been plagued by incredible weight differences, -15 against Belarus, Norway and -18 against Germany. Kazakhstan is the second-smallest team in the tournament, only 2 pounds heavier on average than Austria. Without the weight difference players should have more puck control and execute the plays that Coach Werfring draws up.
    2. Forecheck: the forecheck and center play led to 4 of the 5 goals against Belarus, if Kazakhstan doesn't leave a defenseman in front of the goal like Belarus did late in the game this should be the only play run.
    3. Players to watch: Still waiting for Daniel Obersteiner to have a great game, had a good one against Belarus. He could be one of the best when he gets going.

The signature of an Austrian team is to play with heart, and heart overcame many obstacles today.

They also helped neighbor Germany's bid for aufstieg, so, great game :)

Basically we have to get at least a point off of Belarus. If we do, and we beat Kazakhstan then we can hope either France or Norway loses out.

Keys to the Game vs. Belarus:
    1. Control the puck: Because controlling possession is important for #2
    2. Force Penalties: Struggled to produce penalties in a crucial game against Norway because of lack of puck possession. The powerplay has been extremely effective, Kele Steffler is the point guard at the key, Samuel Witting is the point guard behind the net, and Thomas Winkler is great at shooting the puck.
    3. Offense must start from the perimeter: This sounds counterintuitive, and Mr. Freimuller actually noted this as something he didn't like about this team, however, the best players play along the perimeter, so it will and has been difficult to generate any offense from anywhere except the perimeter. For example, leaders in shots on goal, Witting(F) 8, Steffler(D) 6, Winkler(D) 6, Schreier(D) 4.
    4. Lower lines must have solid forecheking: The Zitz goal was generated by great forechecking from the Okanagan boys, Trothan and Bretschneider. Lines below line one are not yet skilled enough to operate any complicated or meticulous offense, must forecheck and then thow the puck in front of the net more often.
    5. Player to get going - Daniel Obersteiner: Has been invisible, a virtual non-factor with only one shot on goal in the tournament. Has been pushed around and has struggled with puck possession and passing. Should be the leader of this team, must get going in order to give this team a good chance of beating or forcing overtime against Belarus.

Leider 0:2 verloren.

Our efforts now must be shifted to Norway. That is, unless we start win more than one game, which, I certainly hope would happen.

A few roster adjustments were made to adjust for injuries. They can be found on eishockey.at or the IIHF website.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter who's on the ice or who's behind the bench, if the eagle is across their chest and the puck is on the ice you know it's Game time. Auf geht's Burschen!

I don't really think so. Also I would use the word "drama" for way waaaaay more serious things.

Lol like what? Someone started dating a new girl? A girl is being stolen by another guy? Drama isn't supposed to be that serious of a word is it?

Ok, it seems I need a lot of German help. So as you probably read already, the U18 National Team lost to the Junior Capitals today 2-3. Goals were scored by Rene Trothan and Thomas Winkler. I'm not quite getting what is going on with the team however as described by the website and journalists. The OEHV website says

    Zitat

"Leider nicht in den Plan passen die vielen Verletzungen im österreichischen Team. Nach Jean Singer im Testspiel in Brno sind auch noch Simon Wolf und Martin Goritschnig angeschlagen. Für Yannic Pilloni gab es nach seiner Erkrankung kein grünes Licht für eine WM-Teilnahme."

I think it's the word angeschlagen that's tripping me up, it's being translated as "posted" or "attached" but those words don't mean anything in the context of the sentence (player injury). Is it saying that Singer, Wolf and Goritschnig are injured as well or that they are day-to-day?
Also, Herr Freimuller graciously left his commentary on the match here

    Zitat

"U18 heute 2:3 gegen CapsU20. Jetzt sagt auch Yannic Pilloni (krank) ab, damit fehlt Einserstürmer ebenso wie D-Leader Paul Sztatecsny..."

He says that D-leader Paul Sztatecsny is now injured and will be missing, however this is impossible because Paul Sztatecsny didn't even make the 27 man traveling team, and there are still 4 cuts to be made. I have the rosters below to show that he made the original 36 man cut but not the 27 man roster.

If anyone can help, thanks a lot. I don't think it was too bad of a game in the end, Vienna probably had Felix Maxa and Benjamin Nissner and those boys are good ballplayers.

No way Grabner plays this year, it's his contract year. Vanek and M.Raffl are in the playoffs, T.Raffl is injured. Even with all this they could still advance. Italy just went local so the opposition will be weaker. The usual suspects, the Asian countries which don't seem to be getting stronger, Poland, it should still be smooth sailing unless there are an onslaught of injuries or incredibly poor coaching.

This sentence is German at all. Dont`t missunderstand this, but do you really get enough satisfaction on this X/

I'm not sure if there's a german idiom that has similar wording when translated. When someone says "you make of it what you will" in English what they mean is that they are just giving you statistics or fact and no opinions, and you can react to it or draw conclusions as you please.

I scoured the web to find and publish the score for the game early because I know that OEHV will probably not release an article with the result until tomorrow morning (afternoon in Austria). I don't quite understand your phrase. I'm assuming there's a similar german idiom. I also don't understand what I'm not getting satisfaction from. If you mean do I get satisfaction from posting scores and rosters, well it is true me and formerly maverick did kinda post scores for seemingly not one to see, but sports is best shared in my opinion and I really enjoy reading other people's opinions or even when they disagree with mine. Feel free to respond in german by the way, I can translate it and more importantly I don't want people feeling like they have to speak English around me, it's an Austrian forum and so it should be in the native language.

    Eishockey U16

A downside of our best players being in the Swiss league is that we would be limited as far as how much we can develop. Marco Rossi on our top line has played 2 Elite Novizen games, some of the opponents have played that many Elite Junioren games. That's why I thought we would lose today, though the players despaired after the Swiss scored the 3rd goal and collapsed mentally, which is ok they're 14 and 15 years old. That's why the local junior programs need to continue to be strengthened, as well as exports going to countries other than Switzerland such as Maier and Wetzelsberger. For now though, on to Norway, and the Bronze medal we deserve and I believe we will win. :)

Even though I hate the format of the world cup of hockey this year, my hope is that in the future it will allow Team Austria to have a full time head coach. Now every year there will be the EHC, WHC, and every cycle there will be Olympic qualifications, the Olympics, World Cup qualifications, and the World Cup. The cycle will be similar to the Euro championship and the World cup of soccer which each also have qualification tournaments (I think, I follow afcon). I think those tournament plus friendly matches may be enough to warrant a full time coach and keep him busy.

The U16 team continues to be the best U16 team in recent memory. Meanwhile, the U18 team looks like the worst team in recent memory. Today they suffered a 5-1 loss against Germany, following a 4-0 loss to Slovenia and a 7-1 loss to Belarus U17 before that. A few more confusing roster cuts took place. Nicklas Wurschl was left off the defensive side, and even more confusingly Marcel Zitz was excluded from the offensive side. To put this in perspective, Zitz scored more than NTU18 leading scorer Samuel Witting this past season, is larger and actually has a shot at being drafted by a north American club. In his place were a few players like Alexander Maxa, David Konig, and really just about everyone else who made the team. Next they will probably cut Daniel Obersteiner. :banghead: The only line that has been consistently able to create offense is the top line and the only player who has consistently been able to score goals is Samuel Witting. The lineup is small, light, and not particularly fast. It will be a very serious chore to avoid to relegated back to D1B, which is an absolute shame because the way the U16 team is playing, they deserve a chance when they reach 17 years old to push the team from D1A to WJC, not D1B to D1A. There is quite likely another beatdown scheduled tomorrow at the hands of the Swiss U18, then a more winnable game against the Vienna Caps U20. Once they reach the tournament the favorites will be Germany and Belarus, France has a good side and the Kazakhstan/Norway pair would be our hope to not get relegated.
