Even if Austria were to have a team join the KHL/MHL there would need to be a zero legio rule at the youth levels. Right now Austrian youth get their first taste of sitting behind foreigners when they walk into the Red Bull Academy. It's really shameful, but the RBS Academy has done more for Germany than for Austria. This past week RBS U18 went to a tournament in Sweden. Paul Huber scored 3G Marcel Zitz assisted him on them and Marcel also scored 1G assisted by Paul. No other Austrian scored. Only one other Austrian even got good ice time. If junior import regulations do not become harsher then no amount of infrastructural or instructional improvement will go very far.

I think the KHL Latvian argument is missing the mark by quite a bit. Austria has beaten Latvia before, with KHL players, and was beaten by less against Canada than Latvia. China has more KHL players than Austria, as do countries like Kazakhstan and Belarus who need to recruit foreigners to play for the national team to stay relevant. Norway in Sochi had NHl, SHL, KHL and other representations and the game was still won.
It's always said that "you can't expect change overnight" and it's true, however, right now the OEHV is on a 5 year plan that started in 2012 called "Austria Hockey 2017." 4 of the 5 years have passed. I'm pretty sure if you have eclipsed 80% the time until your deadline at work and have made no progress, arguably have moved backwards, that you would not be able to tell your boss "you can't expect change overnight." I like Bader a lot, and I wish there was a way to keep him or perhaps replace Suhonen with him (unlikely as he's a specialist brought in by Suhonen). Fundamentally Suhonen's plan is sound but on the interpersonal level he cannot maintain relationships with people he needs to maintain relationships with and it has reached a point where it is unacceptable. What does Lange lose from not being summoned to the NT? Nothing. He already makes good money in the DEL and has for many years, he does not need bonus money. Neither do many of the other players around which there is controversy. Suhonen puts in much hard work to increase the value of Austria hockey, only to completely undermine it with his own petty actions. The same can be said for the many top junior players he isolates and cuts off. He may not realize but in being petty he does not spite the people he is feuding with, merely himself in his hard work and everyone else working for the establishment of Austrian hockey.
I'm looking forward to this upcoming EBEL season with a lot of anticipation. Players like Baltram, Kromp, Huber, Wukovits, Maxa, it's do or die time now, it's go time now. I very honestly feel the players today are better than the players of before, I feel they're better prepared, trained against harder opposition, they're better physical specimen. If these kids can break through there is absolutely hope for a better tomorrow.

Gernot Mittendorfer needs to realize how demoralizing this is. He needs to refill both the Sports Director and Head Coaching jobs with new faces. He needs to infuse new blood into the program. Perception is often more important that reality. Austrian hockey does not "feel" better than in 2012 when Suhonen took over. You can't sell tickets if people perceive the program is declining. You can't get government funding if the government perceives the program is declining. Suhonen needs to go. 8-1 should never happen, not against Canada, not against anyone.

I know his contract is until next summer but is there any way to let Suhonen walk like right now...

That's the second goal shot from the point with no net traffic.

@ don vito
@ BergerORF: Hinter Lamo wird der Kickert sich aber eh nicht weiter entwickeln können@kabidjan14 Why do you like Alpo that much, did he drink your smoothie?
You mean don't like Alpo? Sorry I'm feeling very sarcastic right now we'd be in this if it weren't for good goaltending. Then my feed died, and I can't watch Orf either so scrambling for a stream. If you all have a stream that works that isn't geographically restrictive please let me know.
-
We may not make the Olympics but nothing would be worse than Alpo having to grow up and call Lange...
-
That goal is on Suhonen for scaring away all the good goalies until we didn't have one that could block a shot from the circle with no traffic in front of the net.
-
How do you cheer "Go Austria!" in German like a chant or a mantra? I googled it before but that didn't work out very well.
-
Keeping Unterweger who actually scored assists and could move the puck was unnecessary. Nico Brunner however, absolutely indispensable.

Long article on the direction of Austrian hockey as it pertains to international tournaments and also trying to address the legios issue.

Marco is the son of former KAC Defender Peter Kasper. Top Prospect!
Yes! See I knew I wasn't crazy the last name Kasper sounded way too familiar. And he absolutely is, 2004 is looking like one insane class.
-
Marco Kasper is Austrian correct? Is he the son of somebody?

That penalty was embarrassing. The guy lost the puck and still beat Madlener.
To be honest I'm not too upset about this game. Our players were obviously outcoached (ahem), they play with little or no chemistry. That said, I'm starting to see the outlines of a gameplan and a little bit of strategy here and there. What I really liked was that we dominated possession with speed, always being first to the puck, making plays etc. Germany especially is a traditionally slow team and if Austria can play more organized (Heinrich and Ulmer will help) then perhaps our speed and pursuit skills can be put to good use.

Wow you've got to be kidding me. 2 goals right when the stream doesn't work. Maybe that's the secret, we get Laola1 to not stream the games and we'll score. And nice job to Thomas Raffl and Markus Schlacher.
And seems like my stream is working too now. Hundertpfund has been really dangerous and here I thought he was just a 2 way badger-style power forward.
-
anscheinend hat laola keinen bock mehr: "dieser livestream wurde beendet. Thank you for watching!!"
I saw that too what's up with that?
You know the offense is doing terrible when the biggest offensive threat is Thomas Hundertpfund. I don't understand why Ganahl should sit while Netrik and Fischer play. They're choking Lukas Haudum, and forget about the penaltykill I think the NT has scored maybe 2 goals in the last 5 games when goals are that difficult to come by you don't need a penaltykill line you need new players.
-
Bacher jetzt -3 oder?
Spielen von den Black Wings nur Lebler und Altmann? Obi und Hofer nicht im Kader?
Hey hey, he was -1 when I wrote the comment.
So many good missed opportunities. Hundertpfund on the 1v0 break, when M.Raffl found Schumnig right under the net, he really should have found that one. Hundertpfund with the perfect pass to Herburger on the 2v1 but Herburger couldn't convert.
-
Haudum just had a super rookie moment with the flop. Still adjusting to the physicality of the men's game. Fischer and Netrik over Ganahl, I guess coach figured we've been scoring so many goals so we can bring in some exclusive PKers.
Komarek, Bacher, Hundertpfund have been pretty good. Hundertpfund could have finished that breakaway though.

It's tough because I remember when Alpo received his two year extension in 2014 and I was disappointed and my very first thought was to this week this tournament. I've never believed in Alpo's ability to manage the national team. The children he can handle, but it takes a man to deal with men.
That said, this is still the National team. At the end of the day, I'll still be pulling for this team really hard and so will everyone else here I believe. If they don't win, just give it 4 years, we'll be there waiting, but I think we still gotta believe that somehow they can pull it off, somehow.

Ok so Ulmer/Heinrich and Grabner/Raffl were veiled. Viveiros, he's injured I hear, is he out for good or is he still a possibility? Unterweger with an assist, that is good news. Obviously it would take a miracle now but that's not asking for too much is it....

Hungary today. Really like the line 2 defense idea. See if we can score a goal every five minutes.
-
Ok so Austria beat HS Riga (combination of HK Riga MHL, SK Riga J18 players) 9-3 today. From the box it was a really really messy game from the start a total of 126 PIM. I wasn't too pleased with Flo Baltram getting thrown out in a fight and then 2 minutes later Christof Kromp got in a scuffle. They're two of our best players, this game was against easy enough of an opponent for it to not matter but we can't afford for them to be thrown out in important games in exchange for 3rd line wingers. Felix Maxa and Dario Winkler scored a lot, the game was won by 6.
-
U20 lines out against Riga. Steffler bumped to second line. More messing with the forward lines but not adjustment that seem meaningful, basically making the 3rd line the second line, but should do well against a fairly half staffed Riga team.
-
From my experience the Austrian hockey community is really small. I would never be surprised if someone knew you, whether friends or parents of friends or staff and children of staff everyone is fairly well connected.
-
Wow that was pretty clever. Mellitzer went with a 4F PP set in overtime Poschmann-Obersteiner-Wachter-Baltram and it worked for the GWG. Austria won 3-2 in overtime. Lots of penalties, but Austria pulled it off. Norway will probably finish second worst like they did last year so that's a measuring stick I guess. For the Championship they get back Andreas Roykas Marthinsen and Christian Kåsastul and we get back Lukas Haudum and Yannic Pilloni. That should favor us. The goal is to win out so can't be too excited about a win against the second-worst team but at least it looks like those games should be somewhat locked up especially that tactically everything is still a mess. Hopefully when Bader returns he will clean shop.
