  • Kai Fässler @ EC Bregenzerwald

I think I'll just give a few of my thoughts.

I've seen short clips more recently...but last full game was January.

I think he would benefit greatly from playing in a solid junior club with good facilities where he can work on individual skills and technique for another year or two. When we talk about 17-18 year olds who play senior level hockey and thrive we're definitely talking about the minority. Players that are both fundamentally and physically developed. A player like Matthews, Laine, Puljujarvi, or a Nando Eggenberger etc.

In a professional hockey club they expect you to have a certain level of proficiency in various aspects, be it your power-skating, stickhandling, passing, shooting, or physical play/pursuit. Playing pro-hockey in your teen years can definitely be helpful for developing your physical play and decision making. But in order to benefit from such one needs to have that expected level of proficiency in the various technical aspects of your game and probably be above that minimum requirement in at least one or two categories. Pro-clubs are focused more on winning and less on developing athletes and Bregenz doesn't have a lot of the resources a player might want to tap into when developing specific fundamentals.

Fassler definitely has things going for him where some of the intangibles are concerned, but physically he could use some work and fundamentally he could also use some work as well. I think the next season or two and off-seasons will definitely be important and indicative for his long-term development.

Fassler could stand to put on a lot of weight...how that would affect his movement is dubious. Nifty hands, developed better in Bregenzerwald than expected, though not stunning.

Frowis as I understand had endured some personal qualms which may explain his Elite A struggles. If he can straighten that out and put in a solid off-season's work then I think he could surprise a lot of people. I had him in my pre-season ranks in 5th.

I see you also liked Demuth a lot and he has no doubt improved. Good speed. The community seems split on him between those who haven't seen him in a year and those who have seen him more recently.

I wouldn't necessarily assume the nature of SBG/NT politics because I am aware of more aspects of the nature of this relationship, though even my point of view is still incomplete, and it is more complicated than I think most people would give it credit for.

The choices presented have a fairly large middle ground. There are 7 legio forwards, which is 2 1/3 lines. Then there's Benedikt Schennach with his 5 points last season and Fabio Schramm with his two. Then there are 4 zero-pointers, two are . Maybe they'll resign Frischmann, or maybe they'll add another legio, but the former would hardly be effective (while counting for points as Schramm now does) and the latter would be expensive.

These prospects would be upgrades to the zero point contingency. A contingency that will definitely fill at least the fourth line and potentially occupy time on the 3rd line as well.

Having spoken to some of the top Tiroler prospects, some are very willing to return to Innsbruck and others less so.

The common thread being that they haven't been approached by HCI :banghead:

Wenn es zu keinen allzu großen Überraschungen mehr kommt müsste dies unsere Gruppe sein:

Russland, USA/Finnland, Tschechien, Schweiz, Weißrussland, Slowakei und Dänemark

This is a great group. I don't want to be overconfident but the chances of avoiding relegation in this group actually look fairly promising.

Respect where respect is due to Norbert Ried but Dario Winkler and Samuel Witting are must-haves now or empirically calculating there isn't going to be any scoring on the lower lines.

Case and point, when a system is built to favor only a certain type of athlete. Without Thomas Raffl to screen or to pull the trigger and Viveiros' shot as well the set pieces and special teams don't work.

For pretty much all benefits you either have to work and/or live in Austria, so I don't think that should be much of a problem.

Perhaps, I know for other dual nationalities it's not a requirement so people needing a medical procedure done will fly back to their second nation to get the procedure done since it is that expensive and more at home, but maybe not in this case.

I thought the game against Kazakhstan featured much better execution but Hungary was just an inferior side. Not really a fan of the line 1 idea even though I am a fan of Hundertpfund, we'll see if they shake that up a bit. Komarek for his part has 5 points in 2 games so far.

    Zitat von R.Bourque

I'd say that South Korea and Hungary are on a pretty decent path with their respective naturalization programmes. I'd argue that the Austrian Federation has no interest in naturalization because of the existing points regulation not because of teh track record, which has always produced quite decent players for austria's national team.
Moral has nothing to with it btw. We're talking about the necessity of staying in B and aspiring for A to justify the mpney invested by sponsors and - not least - the tax payer.

Dual citizens only pay taxes while they reside in Austria. So once they move on to play in another country or retire and return to the States or Canada they'd be privileged to the same benefits. I don't know all the benefits or where all the benefits of Austrian citizenship apply, but I know in Western Europe you all have amazing benefits and these are also paid by tax payer money. Many legios who returned to NA have also raised kids with Austrian citizenships as well who reside in other countries. Perhaps I'm wrong, I'm not an expert on the legal code, but I would think this also costs said tax payer money.

I'm not as informed on South Korea but what I can say about Hungary's program is that it's a lot of smoke with no fire. As they've done with Dansereau replacing Banham they'll have to keep naturalizing legios to stay relevant. Austria's situation isn't Hungary's, Austria's youth pool is irreparably superior and naturalizing one or two athletes won't get the program stuck in the cycle that Hungary or South Korea are in. But I think in a few years if a lot of these older legios retire, wear down and are replaced by prospects you're going to have a couple legios and their children perhaps now with Austrian citizenship and getting benefits, not to mention the strife I know it would case within the federation. I don't think it's worth it.

    @Eiskalt
The fact that there are already many is precisely why some wouldn't want any motion that could increase that number. Now under the point system, there isn't a structural force that would necessitate the increase of legios because of naturalized players say like in Belarus or Kazakhstan, but naturalizing players just doesn't have a good track record. The only countries moving in that direction, Kazakhstan, Hungary, and South Korea, are poster-children for terrible development programs.

The Federation has rather openly expressed disdain for the number of legios in the EBEL, their desired position as an agent of change would be severely undermined by this change. I don't think they'd have the moral authority to call on the EBEL to put Austrians first if even they are also only driven by wins and losses. Even if structurally a depression in development isn't necessitated, the move would be very poorly received by the Austrian hockey community. I think the decision would be short-sighted, it's just the way I see it.

    • 23. April 2017 um 17:06

Naturalizations have a long history of destroying prospect development models, which is why most federations that have been in the game long enough are leaving them. Belarus and their recent decisions to severe ties with multiple national team players is just one example. If my knowledge of the points system is correct, Austria could theoretically naturalize players and not face the same or equal ramifications. However, I don't see the incentive to take this risk. There may appear to be some short term benefits, but the best case scenario is that a few Americans get free health care for life (sounds wonderful :whistling: ) while better Austrian-born athletes have replaced them and the worst case is that prospect development gets undercut by allowing clubs to stack with more legios.

Bernd Wolf was occupied with the NLA/NLB relegation series. I think he would be an upgrade to a few members of the squad, but the improvement at least for now would be marginal.
