Bonk traded to Habs in three-team deal
RALEIGH -- The trade of Ottawa's Radek Bonk was the biggest news on a light day of trading Saturday during the first day of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft at the RBC Center.
Actually, Bonk, who ended the day as a Montreal Canadien, was traded twice in the span of about 10 minutes to elicit strong reaction from a near-full house attending the draft festivities.
First, Bonk was sent from Ottawa to Los Angeles for a third-round pick. The Senators used that pick, 77th overall, to draft Shawn Weller, a 17-year-old left wing from Capital District of the EJHL.
The Kings, however, did not hold onto the enigmatic Czech center for long, packaging him and French goalie Cristobal Huet to the Canadiens in exchange for goalie Mathieu Garon and the 95th overall pick in Saturday's draft. The Kings selected high-school defenseman Paul Baier from Deerfield Academy with that selection.
The Senators were eager to unload Bonk, who will become a restricted free agent July 1. In order to have retained Bonk, Ottawa would have had to offer Bonk a multi-million dollar qualifying offer.
Bonk, the third overall pick by Ottawa in the 1997 Entry Draft, has been a serviceable player for the Senators, but has never lived up to the advance billing attached to him when he was drafted. In 2003-04, the big Czech pivot had 12 goals and 32 assists in 66 regular-season games with the Senators. In the postseason, he had just two assists in seven games. For his career, Bonk has 399 points in 689 regular-season games spread over 10 NHL seasons.
Huet made a name for himself this year when he stepped in for injured goalie Roman Cechmanek and turned a strong showing that featured a 10-16-10 record for the Kings with a 2.43 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage.
Garon, the backup to Jose Theodore in Montreal, appeared in 19 regular-season games this year, going 8-6-2 with a 2.27 GAA and a .921 save percentage. Garon was drafted 44th overall by the Canadiens in 1996.
Of the 13 other trades made Saturday, only two involved active NHL players. The rest were simply the transfer of draft picks.
In the first of those two, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim traded defenseman Niclas Havelid to Atlanta in exchange for defenseman Kurtis Foster.
Foster, 22, appeared in three NHL games in 2003-2004 with Atlanta, earning an assist. He also played in 67 games with Chicago of the American Hockey League, posting 11 goals, 30 points and 95 penalty minutes.
Havelid, who has played all 310 of his NHL games with Anaheim, has scored 24 goals and 85 points at the NHL level. The 31-year-old defenseman was drafted by the Mighty Ducks in the third round (83rd overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
In the last trade involving a player, Edmonton traded left wing Jason Chimera and its third-round pick (80th overall) in the 2004 Entry Draft to Phoenix for New Jersey's second-round pick (previously acquired, 57th overall) and Buffalo's fourth-round pick (previously acquired, 112th overall) in 2004. Due to a trade last year involving Phoenix and Carolina, the Coyotes then transferred the 80th overall pick to the Hurricanes.
