VILLACH
Lively Villach is an important transport hub for routes into Italy and Slovenia, with visitors from both countries much in evidence during the summer holidays. It’s not a very picturesque town, but serves as a handy base for exploring the nearby lakes, beaches and beauty spots. Warmbad Villach is a suburb famous for its rejuvenating spa waters.
SALZBURG
The city of Salzburg, famous as Mozart’s birthplace and home to a world-famous classical-music tradition, is second only to Vienna in popularity with visitors. Devotees of rather different musical genre are also drawn the region in surprising numbers: in 1964 Salzburg and its surrounding hills were alive with making of the blockbuster Hollywood film, The Sound of Music.
INNSBRUCK
Of all Austria’s provincial capitals, Innsbruck has arguably the best backdrop; mountains on its doorstep to the north and south, and a deep valley spreading to the east and west. The outdoor opportunities are obvious, with walking and skiing topping the lengthy list of things to do.
WIEN
Think of Vienna and a gamut of images surge forward to flood the memory banks: angelic choirboys, proud white stallions strutting in measured sequence, grand imperial palaces and bombastic baroque architecture too beautiful to ignore, Art Nouveau masterpieces of depth and quality, art galleries with unfathomable collections and, of course, coffee, delicate pastries and divine cakes. Then there’s the music. Just let it roll of your tongue - Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert, Strauss, Brahms, Mahler, Schönberg – for lovers of classical music, it doesn’t get any better than this.
KLAGENFURT
It’s not an urban centre comparable with Salzburg or Vienna, but Klagenfurt, Canrinthia’s provincial capital, is an enjoyable, sunny city, handy as a base for exploring the Wörthersee’s lakeside villages and the attractive medieval towns to the north.
LINZ
In the eyes of many Austrians, Linz is a city to avoid, a provincial backwater with heavy industry. The skyline of belching smokestacks to the southeast of the city certainly can’t be ignored…. This is a city with a highly attractive Altstadt, two world-class museums and a lively buzz; a city striding into the future…
GRAZ
Of all Austrian cities, it could be argued that Graz has the best of everything. For starters, it’s an attractive city; the green of the parks, the red of the rooftops and the blue of the river are a picturesque combination. Then there’s architecture; Renaissance courtyards, baroque palaces and groundbreaking modern constructions… Culturally, Graz is leagues ahead of many of its European contemporaries, with a full festival calendar….
JESENICE – BLED (kein Eintrag für Jesenice, als Ersatz dient Nachbarort Bled)
With its emerald-green lake, picture-postcard church on an islet, medieval castle clinging to a rocky cliff and some of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps and the Karavanke as backdrops, Bled is Slovenia’s most popular resort and its biggest tourist money-spinner.
