1997 BRAWL IN HOCKEYTOWN
MARCH 26, 1997 | DETROIT 6, COLORADO 5 OT
It begins as a small scuffle near the boards between Igor Larionov and Peter Forsberg then explodes into a no-holds-barred free-for-all as Darren McCarty pummels Claude Lemieux, Mike Vernon bloodies Patrick Roy, and Brendan Shanahan and Adam Foote duke it out. (Full Brawl.)
Darren McCarty exacts revenge on Claude Lemieux's blind-side hit on Kris Draper during the 1996 Stanley Cup playoffs by pummeling him to a bloody mess at center ice.
Mike Vernon and Patrick Roy duke it out at center ice in one of the most memorable, entertaining -- and meaningful -- goalie bouts in NHL history.
With the Wings trailing 1-0 early in the second period, Sergei Fedorov skates in and snaps a laser-like wrist shot past Patrick Roy to tie the game at 1-1.
Tied at 5-5 early in overtime, Brendan Shanahan snakes a perfect pass to the goalmouth where Darren McCarty redirects the puck into the net for an emotional 6-5 win over the Avalanche.
March 26, 1997 was a memorable game for any Red Wings' fan, and the entire game is highlighted here in this clip, from the beginning to the dramatic finish.

DVD 4:
Game 6 Conference Finals @ Colorado
Detroit 2 Colorado 0
DENVER — The Colorado Avalanche players and coaches had no trouble analyzing their Game 6 loss to the Detroit Red Wings Wednesday night.
They just didn't play well enough to win.
As to why, the answer wasn't as clear. All the Avs know now is that they have one more chance to play their best game of the season, and that will be Friday in Game 7 at Joe Louis Arena. If they respond the same way they did Wednesday with the chance to put the Wings away, they'll be cleaning out their lockers on Saturday.
Dominik Hasek made 24 saves for his ninth career playoff shutout and Brendan Shanahan and Darren McCarty scored as the Red Wings won 2-0 to avoid elimination in the Western Conference Finals.
"We didn't play our best game and they were better than us," Peter Forsberg said. "They got the lead, and they sat on the lead and we didn't come after them hard enough. Hasek played well and we just didn't generate enough and get enough shots."
This will be the fourth Game 7 in a row for the Avs dating back to last year's Stanley Cup Finals, and their fifth Game 7 of the past six series. It's also the second time this year the Avs will play in a Game 7 after wasting the chance to put a team away earlier.
"You complicate a game against a team like that and you fall right into what they want, right into their game plan," Colorado defenseman Adam Foote said. "They may have had a little more jump than us, I don't know why, I can't explain that to you. But they were desperate. The positive is that we've been playing better on the road."
The game was similar to Game 6 of the Conference Finals three years ago against Dallas. Playing at home with a 3-2 lead in the series, the Avs choked against the Stars and lost 4-1. They returned to Dallas for Game 7, and lost that game 4-1 while the Stars advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals and eventually won.
It didn't help that the Avs lost another one of their forwards for the fourth game in a row. Stephane Yelle left the game early in the second period with what the team called a neck injury and did not return.
That left Colorado with just 10 healthy forwards and one defenseman, Pascal Trepanier, who was playing as a forward. Three of the players in uniform for the Avs Wednesday had played in a combined seven games in the first two series.
The Avs came out strong, taking a 4-1 shot advantage in the first five minutes of the game. They wouldn't get another shot for the rest of the period, however. It appeared Colorado was going to escape the first period with the game still scoreless, but that's when the Red Wings' first line, which hadn't done much in the first five games, decided to step in.
Captain Steve Yzerman took one shot that Roy made the save on, and the puck went behind the net. Colorado defenseman Rob Blake sent it around the boards, but Nick Lidstrom intercepted it and fired in a shot from the blue line. Roy also stopped that, as well as the rebound that Yzerman scooped up and sent back at him.
Roy thought he had the puck in his glove. He was wrong. When he stood up and threw his glove in the air as he so often does, he left the puck sitting exposed in the crease. Brendan Shanahan tapped it into the open net, and Roy turned around, realized what had happened, and bent over with his elbows on his knees and head hung when the buzzer sounded at 19:21.
"I thought I had the puck," he said. "I made a great save on Yzerman and I thought I had it in my glove. I was looking for the puck. I guess it just rolled under me and they put it in."
With the game 1-0 going into the second, the Avs still had a chance. The first five minutes were slowed by a number of penalties creating four-on-four situations, and then Yelle took a hit from Steve Duchesne that may have ended his season. Forty seconds later Colorado had its first power play of the game, but looked like the anemic team they had become and couldn't capitalize.
The Red Wings put the nail in the coffin at 13:27, capitalizing on a turnover by Peter Forsberg at the Detroit blue line that led to a 2-on-1 rush. Darren McCarty scored his fourth goal of the series, beating Roy low on the stick side for a 2-0 lead.
"We had a lot of chances. We had a lot of power plays and we didn't capitalize on them," defenseman Greg de Vries said. "We had a lot of close chances in the second period that we didn't put in. (Hasek) played well, he covers the whole bottom of the net but the whole top was open and we just didn't put it in."
The only other time the Avs had been shut out in the playoffs was in Game 5 against Los Angeles, when they were up 3-1 in the series with the chance to close it out.
